As LunaSol noticed, yesterday's shot was of Amirah, our eleven year old, as is today's. And like yesterday's shot this was taken reasonably late in the evening using fill-flash to add some detail to the foreground. Yesterday's shot might have worked without flash but it was essential for this one. And in case you're wondering: I was about eight feet below her as she walked along the top of the sea-wall at Canvey Island.

Oh, and this one looks best with the black theme.

Cool. Where do you find skies like that?? Your pictures seem to be full of them. Ha, I can't believe I'm jealous of your cloudy weather!

comment by A Daily Dose of Vision at 10:07 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

I'd noticed the clouds too, in this shot and the others. Are the skies really that dramatic, or do you do lots of post on them? This is indeed a fantastic shot. The colors work so well together.

comment by greywulf at 10:12 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Yet another amazing image from one amazing photographer. I'd be jealous if I wasn't so in awe at your skill!

There's so much in this shot. It's one girl with the whole of the universe openning up for her, and it speaks volumes without a single word.

Wonderful.

comment by Just Some Guy at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Awesome shot. Really amazingly layed out. The clouds are so cool. And the outline of the girl is great.

comment by miklos at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Finally, one that I can comment 99% positively on ;) .... I like it. If she was a bit more to the right, to be centered in that cloud coming diagonally down on her.. AND if there was some wind blowing straight at her, it would be like she was in a wind tunnel. Nonetheless. Nice one.

comment by Patrick at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Very good shot. Fill in flash might be a little too much for my taste, but overall, beautiful. The sky is amazing as well. Nice job.

comment by owen billcliffe at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Utterly stunning, David. Yesterday's shot did nothing for me, really (purely subjective point of view obviously!) but this is altogether more your style and much much more dramatic! I love the contrast of her black dress against the light sky, that becomes more brooding towards the right. She's going to love this one when she grows up.

comment by Prasoon at 10:58 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

This is shattering everything else in the world...
Good one. :)

comment by peter cohen at 11:03 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

There is a very thin outline of slightly lighter shading around most of the young lady's form... Can you say what that is? What may be the cause of it?
Thank you.
Another long-term fan!

comment by Jem at 11:18 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

This is wonderful! It's such a striking photograph! Love it! :)

comment by Fellow Eskimo at 11:20 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

I like this one much better than yesterdays, the sky just has such wonderful detail, and you are able to see much more of your daughter. I guess I just really like to have the subject front and center.

comment by Neil at 11:46 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Astounding image! The clouds are incredible. I'd be interested in finding out what post processing you did on this.

comment by Ioannis at 11:55 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

I like yesterday's better, but this might be just me.

The sky is amazing on this one, as is the composition.

The only thing that makes me prefer yesterday's is that I think the flash gives an unnatural skin colour to the girl.

Great work.

comment by m at 11:59 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005

Amirah look like she's on the catwalk. Great pic.
I perfer it on the white skin - it's more magazine like then, staight out of vogue :-)

comment by Weston Boyd at 12:22 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

I'm glad you keep getting great shots out of your children. They have been some of my favorites recently.

comment by LunaSol at 01:39 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Beautiful Amirah and beautiful sky...they compliment one another :)

comment by Steve at 02:03 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Amazing shot, very striking.

David, question for you... Since you mentioned that you think this shot looks best against the Black theme, have you considered rigging your Movabletype entries so that each entry is initally set to feature the particular theme you think works best? Then, of course, the user could still change it if they wished.

You may have discussed this in previous post...

What a striking shot. Every element of it is so strong.

comment by Alec Long at 03:12 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Wicked drama, Dave. Well done.

Ctritically, though, not seeing her feet bothers me. I'm guessing you opted not to include the wall to add to the sense of floating in space, but without the feet she feels cut off.

comment by Eric Hancock at 04:34 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

The color of the sky is beautiful

comment by jcyrhs at 05:19 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

the backgroun looks like some x-ray film. I love it.

comment by Talendo at 07:39 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Well, I see dozens of pics everyday and this is above all very very original. You're right David; I wouldn't have accepted this with other thing instead the black dress against the black sky.

comment by Navin Harish at 07:39 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

This is amazing shot. A picture where you keep looking and have different thoughts. You see a girl being one wth this universe then you think about the magnitude of the universe and H2G2 comes to mind "An infinitely small dot on a infinetly small dot in an infinitely big universe" Too good

comment by genedavinci at 08:18 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

wow. this is gothic! the black theme really brings out the photo. great!

comment by Whitney at 08:35 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

The halo (around the legs mostly) is distracting. It's a small thing, but once you notice it it's hard to keep your eyes away from it. Overall, a strong image.

comment by SteveO at 08:52 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

This is a great shot, the composition is perfect, its just the flash effect looks a little strong for my taste.

comment by Jay {photogeny} at 09:27 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

I wouldn't have thought that strong flash could work well for a portrait, but it is the starkness of the skin tones, and the absence of any detail in the blacks which make this so powerful.

And that is one incredible sky. Personally, I think this is definitely one of your best.

comment by andy at 01:18 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Striking, really. Very strong photograph.

Great shot, beautifully done. The idea to shoot her from below is really unique, but I am especially amazed about the sky. This one cloud almost looks like a spine, unreal. Wonderful job, congrats...

comment by naz at 04:47 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

great clouds. I agree w miklos, hair might've looked better streaming out behind. Title? The Tempest.

comment by darragh at 05:10 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

great use of jet trail and flash.

comment by Sam at 05:31 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

The use of flash combined with the... erm... colorization makes this photo look dramatic and beautiful all at the same time. This is totally chromasia. :-)

comment by Jenny G at 05:58 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

amazing skin tone brought out by the flash

comment by Raffi at 06:16 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Stunning. Really shows the beauty of your kid.

comment by skevbo at 06:59 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

Very cool shot! The sky is an amazing contrast with your daughter.

comment by Karl at 07:16 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

In the cloud shape, I almost see the mouth/jaw of something like a fish surging up out of the water. So there's an aggressive element juxtaposed with the relaxed attitude I get from the girl. Of course the rich darks and the glowing skin tone are striking.

comment by Amy at 08:12 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

This photo is remarkable! I love the black colors in the sky with the wispy white clouds. Your daughter looks very lofty

comment by m at 11:50 PM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005

It's nice to see a portrait not of the youngest two making it into the top of the most commented!

comment by djn1 at 12:20 AM (GMT) on 15 July, 2005

Thanks everyone.

A Daily Dose of Vision: the clouds were colourised and I increased the contrast.

miklos: I know what you mean about the composition but this was snapped as we wandered along and chatted. I don't like to pose shots of our children, at least not very often.

peter cohen: the outline is a result of the sharpening. I've minimised it a bit since your comment.

Steve: yes, I've thought about setting the colour scheme on an image by image basis but decided against it.

Alec Long: a small amount of the wall was visible in the original but it didn't add anything to the shot so I cropped it.

myla: I have no idea what he said either :-)

Enric: have a look at what I wrote for this entry.

m: yep, I agree.

comment by Yuki at 01:08 AM (GMT) on 15 July, 2005

It's so dark that it is filled with light. Beautifully done.

i love it!

comment by Adriana at 08:24 PM (GMT) on 15 July, 2005

WOW. gr8 angle here. And the sky is agaim wonderful. Love how the color seems to have some sort of gradient. :)

comment by john at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 15 July, 2005

Nothing really to add that hasn't been said before. It's a wonderful photograph and I've come back to view it four or five times these two days.

comment by Konrad at 12:05 AM (GMT) on 16 July, 2005

I don't really know what to write because sometimes your photos really leave me speechless......but I had to write something. I've been visiting for a while now but this has such a wonderful feel to it. Your girls will have the most amazing record of their younger years compared to the formulaic school photos that are all that most of us have :-)

comment by Magusita at 11:01 PM (GMT) on 17 July, 2005

Beautiful Picture! I love the Colors...

comment by Tristan at 06:43 AM (GMT) on 20 July, 2005

Hello! It has been awhile since I've visited here and commented, but decided I would. In general your photos amaze me but I don't really care for this one. It seems very unnatural. Her skin looks strange from the flash. And her visual relationship to the background is a bit strange. Sorry that these comments are a bit vague, but they aren't really things I can put my finger on.

Stunning. You've capture and created fierceness engulfed by youth.
Beautifully erotic.

comment by Rowan at 03:05 PM (GMT) on 22 July, 2005

Amazing photo. Your work is very inspiring! Interesting the way you've used flash a lot, i will have to experiment with the fill flash..

comment by Matt Simpson at 12:43 AM (GMT) on 4 February, 2006

This seems a touch provocative for an eleven year old, but it's still a great composition.
