As LunaSol noticed, yesterday's shot was of Amirah, our eleven year old, as is today's. And like yesterday's shot this was taken reasonably late in the evening using fill-flash to add some detail to the foreground. Yesterday's shot might have worked without flash but it was essential for this one. And in case you're wondering: I was about eight feet below her as she walked along the top of the sea-wall at Canvey Island.
Oh, and this one looks best with the black theme.
captured camera lens focal length aperture shutter speed shooting mode exposure bias metering mode ISO flash image quality RAW converter cropped?
I'd noticed the clouds too, in this shot and the others. Are the skies really that dramatic, or do you do lots of post on them? This is indeed a fantastic shot. The colors work so well together.

Yet another amazing image from one amazing photographer. I'd be jealous if I wasn't so in awe at your skill!
There's so much in this shot. It's one girl with the whole of the universe openning up for her, and it speaks volumes without a single word.
Wonderful.

Awesome shot. Really amazingly layed out. The clouds are so cool. And the outline of the girl is great.
comment bymiklos at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005
Finally, one that I can comment 99% positively on ;) .... I like it. If she was a bit more to the right, to be centered in that cloud coming diagonally down on her.. AND if there was some wind blowing straight at her, it would be like she was in a wind tunnel. Nonetheless. Nice one.
comment byPatrick at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005
Very good shot. Fill in flash might be a little too much for my taste, but overall, beautiful. The sky is amazing as well. Nice job.
comment byowen billcliffe at 10:52 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005
Utterly stunning, David. Yesterday's shot did nothing for me, really (purely subjective point of view obviously!) but this is altogether more your style and much much more dramatic! I love the contrast of her black dress against the light sky, that becomes more brooding towards the right. She's going to love this one when she grows up.

There is a very thin outline of slightly lighter shading around most of the young lady's form... Can you say what that is? What may be the cause of it?
Thank you.
Another long-term fan!
This is wonderful! It's such a striking photograph! Love it! :)

I like this one much better than yesterdays, the sky just has such wonderful detail, and you are able to see much more of your daughter. I guess I just really like to have the subject front and center.
Astounding image! The clouds are incredible. I'd be interested in finding out what post processing you did on this.
comment byIoannis at 11:55 PM (GMT) on 13 July, 2005
I like yesterday's better, but this might be just me.
The sky is amazing on this one, as is the composition.
The only thing that makes me prefer yesterday's is that I think the flash gives an unnatural skin colour to the girl.
Great work.

Amazing shot, very striking.
David, question for you... Since you mentioned that you think this shot looks best against the Black theme, have you considered rigging your Movabletype entries so that each entry is initally set to feature the particular theme you think works best? Then, of course, the user could still change it if they wished.
You may have discussed this in previous post...

Wicked drama, Dave. Well done.
Ctritically, though, not seeing her feet bothers me. I'm guessing you opted not to include the wall to add to the sense of floating in space, but without the feet she feels cut off.

This is amazing shot. A picture where you keep looking and have different thoughts. You see a girl being one wth this universe then you think about the magnitude of the universe and H2G2 comes to mind "An infinitely small dot on a infinetly small dot in an infinitely big universe" Too good

The halo (around the legs mostly) is distracting. It's a small thing, but once you notice it it's hard to keep your eyes away from it. Overall, a strong image.

This is a great shot, the composition is perfect, its just the flash effect looks a little strong for my taste.
comment byJay {photogeny} at 09:27 AM (GMT) on 14 July, 2005
I wouldn't have thought that strong flash could work well for a portrait, but it is the starkness of the skin tones, and the absence of any detail in the blacks which make this so powerful.
And that is one incredible sky. Personally, I think this is definitely one of your best.
This is fabulous (as always) and one of my favorites you've shot of her, but I confess that I forgot what I was going to write b/c I can't help but marvel at John's spanish (italian?). ;)

The use of flash combined with the... erm... colorization makes this photo look dramatic and beautiful all at the same time. This is totally chromasia. :-)

Very cool shot! The sky is an amazing contrast with your daughter.
In the cloud shape, I almost see the mouth/jaw of something like a fish surging up out of the water. So there's an aggressive element juxtaposed with the relaxed attitude I get from the girl. Of course the rich darks and the glowing skin tone are striking.
A Daily Dose of Vision: the clouds were colourised and I increased the contrast.
miklos: I know what you mean about the composition but this was snapped as we wandered along and chatted. I don't like to pose shots of our children, at least not very often.
peter cohen: the outline is a result of the sharpening. I've minimised it a bit since your comment.
Steve: yes, I've thought about setting the colour scheme on an image by image basis but decided against it.
Alec Long: a small amount of the wall was visible in the original but it didn't add anything to the shot so I cropped it.
myla: I have no idea what he said either :-)

Hello! It has been awhile since I've visited here and commented, but decided I would. In general your photos amaze me but I don't really care for this one. It seems very unnatural. Her skin looks strange from the flash. And her visual relationship to the background is a bit strange. Sorry that these comments are a bit vague, but they aren't really things I can put my finger on.
