This is one of about six shots of Rhowan eating her ice-cream on Canvey beach and I have to confess that I'm not entirely happy with any of them. Sometimes a shot comes together, while at other times the various elements just don't quite gel. Anyway, in the absence of anything else to put up, and on the basis that I quite like some aspects of the shot, I thought I'd put it up.

MMMMM Yummi. I Love the focus. and how she looks agains the sky in the background.

Cute portrait! I think i'd have liked it to be without the people in the background because i find them a little distracting - but yet another lovely photo once again :)

i would actually like to see what the color version of this picture looks like. i love the way you toned this image.

Can you tell me how you determine your ISO on a shot like this? Most would use 400 or 800. Is it because of the fill flash that you use 100?
Also, did you bounce the flash at the ground?

I'm stupid. My questions were geared toward yesterday's shot, not this one. Sorry.

The background makes me curious of what might be the happening far from the portrait. It doesn't distract me but it makes me wonder, and that's not bad at all because it makes me stare on the image longer. It makes me think.

You are really good. Also, way to take a lot of pictures.

thats pretty awesome. she looks like an entirely new creature compared to some of the other shots.

I smiled the second I saw this. Awesome capture.

I love how her eyes always have so much contrast. Does this only work for her, or is there some PS secret to it? The cone must be tastier than the ice cream!

comment by Neil at 11:44 PM (GMT) on 15 July, 2005

One thing's for sure, she is definitely enjoying her ice cream! I must confess to not liking the background in this shot, but otherwise, it's a really cute pic of Rho.

In this very changeable world it's wonderfu l to see an image that reminds me of my childhood.
Great shot.

I love this shot for being an artistic portrayal of an everyday event. Her hair has so much depth to it and I love the contrast.

You sure do like that 17-40 :)

I didn't know you were into action shots! :P

Nice shot. Though I wonder whether it would have looked better withouth the guy with the pram in the background.

comment by Prasoon at 04:42 PM (GMT) on 16 July, 2005

What a capture..
Auto focus works for sure and now the guy in the background n others, who've been outfocussed add glamour to this image.
I wish that the icecream was melting n a lil should've appeared dripping :)

it's adorable, i don't know what you mean about "suppose" it is quite good....i love it! of course, i love any shot of rho because her expressive character really makes a shot...but i'll have to agree about the people in the background, the stroller is a bit distracting. Plus I'd love to see the sandy shoreline "meet" the cone near the same level (if you see what I mean)...it would add in interesting quirky dimension, don't you think?

comment by m at 10:31 PM (GMT) on 16 July, 2005

A fab shot, I've looked at it a couple of times over the last 24hours and I've enjoyed every time. I see no distraction other than the ice cream!
:-)

It's been HOT here in Chicago - I could use an ice cream cone! ... I like the toning in this one, DJ ... good stuff... I'm going to have to use that lens more often .. it's nice... Hope all is well...

i like the way she licks the cone, and u capture the moment, with the people behind in the blurr. nice one.

THIS is my most-favorite shot of yours yet, Dave. Absolute perfection! In fact, after the baby's here and things settle down, please get in touch, I'd love to buy a print of this one ;)

comment by Jennifer at 01:57 PM (GMT) on 19 July, 2005

I think this shot is just beautiful and it is a great contrast from your recent work. However, contrast is exactly what you have been doing recently. This shot is great for the simplicity of its tone and the great capture of your lens. The shot is perfectly timed. This is my favorite.

Could be part of an ad campaign for a store like Crate&Barrel.

It's a great picture. And I love the tone. Is this one of the Warm Gray duotones from Photoshop, or a custom creation?

Simply the best I have seen so far on the net. Your collections are really worth seeing.
