I don't have a great deal to say about this one other than that it does a good job of capturing the wonderfully expressive nature of our youngest daughter's eyes which, in this shot, were lightened using the Curves tool.

~David, this has to be on eof my favorite images from you...I must be honest, I am not one to take to images of objects, "'stuff" for alack of a better term', but i doy feel drawn to your images of people, especially this beautiful young subject...you display an ease with shooting portraiture such as this, which is exactly my cup of tea. The editing with the curves really brought out the tones, well done and well noted...those eyes just grab the viewer and suck them right into the frame, that is the mark of a successful shot, when a focal point such as those can bring the viewer in, keep them focused and have them looking for more in the frame...and the off-center placement of her in the camera and as presented is a huge bonus composition-wise...well done, and one of your best IMHO~

What a BEAUTIFUL portrait. The eyes really grab your attention, the composition is superb, Rho's expression is great & the DoF really focusses the attention EXACTLY where it's supposed to be.

The eyes are stunning, but I still think your daughter is going to hate you when she's older.
couldn't disagree more, m. how could his daughters hate these pictures? few childhoods have been so artfully and beautifully captured.

Screaming at your photo and I feel like I'm such a failure at being a good photographer!!! I really like what you did with the sepia's-- the skin tones is perfect. What did you do for lighting? The eyes almost look supernatural.

Sorry to impose on you but since you are using blogamanica, wich plan did you use? Just to get an idea what your site look like. *Thanks*
I think, I know what “m” meant by saying “The eyes are stunning, but I still think your daughter is going to hate you when she’s older.”
Right after the page loaded, those eyes reminded me one of your previous entry titled “somewhat impish” posted on June 19th.
Probably the curve adjustment on her eyes or the sharpening gave this feeling to the otherwise great picture.
really lovely work, dave. these girls are going to have the greatest photo albums when they grow up. what a fabulous legacy you're leaving for them.

Great photo both - aesthetically and more importantly documenting another moment in your daughters life.
I cannot possibly see how she would hate you for this especially seeing as you are going to be able to converse with her about her personality and how you feel this photo reflects this.
The searing sharpness of your daughter's eyes and dark clouded sky make this a tremendous shot. I'd love to see how a photo such as this evolves from raw file to final image.

Also - I think it may be worth pointing out that the use of flash here is superb. I avoid flash as much as possible because I like working in available light but it has to be said that this is a very very good balance between flash and ambient light.
comment byParker at 08:28 PM (GMT) on 18 July, 2005
This is an amazing, incredible portrait. I'm half considering using this picture as the wallpaper on my computer -- I bet that's a thought that would surely um... creep out... a parent. Nah, come to think of it, I think it's a pretty weird idea too, so I won't. But your daughter really is very photogenic and you have an eye for framing pictures like no one else. Keep up the good work!!
Thanks everyone, I was really pleased with this one too.
m: you might be right about 'somewhat impish', but I think she'll like this one.
Parker: no, that's fine by me. In fact, if I didn't post shots of our children that people thought suitable for desktop portraits I think I'd be less happy. That you consider this art (or sorts) is a good thing.
comment byDavid Serville at 10:14 PM (GMT) on 18 July, 2005
I love your work. Im not sure I can get as good a picture with my canon EOS 350D. I have only just started taking pictures. Your lighting is outstanding. Do you use photo shop much on your pictures? What is the curves tool?
comment by Andy at 11:31 PM (GMT) on 18 July, 2005
Obviously, everyone has agreed this is an excellent photo. Well done!
I'd also be interested in learning about how you approached lighting on this. Anything different about how you approached lighting on this?

This photograph cuts me to the quick. What is she saying with her gaze? Is she asking us, "What are you doing to help make my future better?" or "See how beautiful the world can be?" or "So long, you bunch of jerks! Thanks for screwing things up for me! Go ahead and die, this is my world now!" or "Hi Mom, hi Dad, I love you."
