I went for a stroll on the beach this evening and thought I'd taken about three or four shots worth putting up, but this is probably the only one that's worth posting. Oh well, it was a pleasant evening, and after a day of assembling kitchen units it made a welcome change.
On another matter, if you've found chromasia rather slow to load over the last 12 hours or so it's because I was featured on a BBC news article on photoblogging, alongside Sam (Daily Dose of Imagery) and Valerie (Your Waitress Photos). So far today I've got through almost 38GB of traffic, which is about six times what I normally get through in 24 hours! Anyway, I'm certainly not going to complain ;-)

Very nice. This shot is very crisp and clean, I really like it a lot. You should take strolls like this more ofter ;)

Congrats on all the new fans and popularity! This photo is great just like all the rest. I can't find anything I would change myself, except maybe show more detail, and less blur of the surroundings.. so you can better see where you are actually at, and what type of environment.

Mighty tidy rubbish dumping. If only we could get folks to take it home. And the BBC, eh? I dunno. You'll be going all establishment on us next. Whatever will we do? :)

probably my favourite of all your shots... incredible

Congrats David... :-)
This shot allures me for the smooth texture of the dunes captured!
That doesn't look too sanitary. I'm noticing the details in the sand. It's an incredibly sharp image. I'm really appreciating your exif data. Keep up the good work!

I generally love almost all of your photos, but not this one. Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand (people who) litter in real life, so I don't like seeing it in a photo either.
comment byDavid D. at 06:29 AM (GMT) on 21 July, 2005
I love the color, clarity, vertical composition and depth of field on this shot. It seems to me that the horizontal composition would have improved were the bottle about half its width farther right. Otherwise, an excellent pic.
My reaction? It's a picture of garbage. I guess you've presented a well-executed pictue of garbage, but it's still garbage on the beach. The beach would be better off without the trash someone left, and so would the image. I tend to agree with Anthony above. You've ilicited an 'eww gross' emotion from me. Is it worth it?
Excellent bokeh in the BG and detail on the main subject, congrats on the link to BBC and wish you further success with this site...

38Gb!!! Wow, thats a lot, but cool that your getting even more publicity.
I really like the DoF in this shot, thats what makes it for me, really good.

Just Stunning!
How much post processing was involoved?

I'm one of your new visitors following your mention by the BEEB. I have spent several hours since then admiring your work. I am genuinely impressed with the quality, and I especially appreciate the technical info. I had no idea sites like yours were out there, now that I do; I intend to be a regular visitor. Please keep the pictures coming. I just submitted some pics for a competition (the BBC's) for the first time ever, and now hope to send more.
Today's photo is another winner for me!

just been to brighton and this immediately made me think on how disgusting young people can be when they party on the beach...
anyway, think the photo is brilliant!! it started my day in office, with a grey london outside.... must come see what fylde coast looks like!

It's that perfect saturation again! Did you increase it in post processing?
Like the DOF, too, but I’d perhaps have preferred a touch more to make the grass just a spot less OOF...
I didn’t immediately see litter: I saw a nice cool drink on hot summer evening!
Great stuff.

HI, I am also one of your new 'BBC' fans. I think you take and make some fantasitic photos. I am truly impressed. I particularily like the deeply saturated colours in your photos: the greens are really green, and the blues really blue. How much time do you spend photoshoping your photos ?
As for this photo I think its great also - including the bottle in the shot. Personally without the bottle, I don't think that the shot would work.
Hey djn, congrats, just heard about Aunt Beeb (been offline) linking. I guess that puts some pressure to perform, eh? ;)
comment by sara at 12:26 PM (GMT) on 21 July, 2005
just wanted to point out that i didn't mean that i see litter in the pic... just thought of brighton beach for the first few seconds, than could only admire the beauty of the masterpiece! ;)
comment by Aris at 12:55 PM (GMT) on 21 July, 2005
I'd very much like to see some info on your post-processing techniques - in particular the B&W conversions.
From the look of your pics, it appears you make use of a polarizing filter? Is that the case, or is it all done in post-processing?

Amazingly shallow DOF, which totally works for this shot. I guess that's what you get with a macro lens. I never used a macro before.
comment byCarlos at 06:25 PM (GMT) on 21 July, 2005
Great DOF and enormous contrast of colours (sand looks specially amazing)!
I know I should be looking elsewhere but I love how the sand came out. Its texture looks so soft. It actually looks more like a brown blanket than sand.
Thanks everyone. As for this being a shot of some litter: Blackpool council are pretty good at keeping the beaches clean so this isn't too much of an issue.
nogger: nah, that's not going to happen. Well, if someone offered me a load of money I might consider it, but other than that things will carry on pretty much as usual ;-)
Ben Archer (and Arthur and Martin): as with all my shots I spent some time working on it in Photoshop – contrast, saturation, colour balance, and so on – but this one isn't a million miles away from the original scene.
naz: yep, I guess there is a bit of pressure, but I think it's probably a good thing. I'm quite lazy in some ways so the pressure of knowing I have an audience with a certain set of expectations keeps me on my toes ;-)
Aris: I don't have a polarizer for this lens so this was done in Photoshop.
Rajit: thanks :-)
Guilherme: yes, generally, the DoF is very shallow with this lens, particularly at close range.
Jen: I like the sand too.
comment by Aris at 08:30 PM (GMT) on 21 July, 2005
Ok, but you use a polariser on other shots then? How about some insight into your post-processing technique too (unless it's top secret of course!).
Aris: yes, I use a polariser on my 17-40mm. As for post-processing techniques: they're not a secret, I just often don't have the time to write up each image. I'll try and include more details in at least some of my shots.
I've been away on vacation for a good six weeks and just got back earlier this week - so this shot totally brings me back to my vacation (I was in thailand). completely loving this.

It's pretty, but the fact that it's of some oddly arranged litter just takes all the power out of the photo.
Another great shot, you seem to be able to take captivating shots of almost anything!
love it. That 100mm macro lens gives superb bokeh.
I love the light in this shot.
