Here's yet another shot from the Saturday before last when John and I went to the North City Festival in Manchester. This one is a shot of a performance artist who was playing the part of an Australian life-guard, sat atop a ladder at the side of a path in the park.
Oh, and I have two more portraits to put up, both of which I prefer to this one, after which I'll probably revert to some more chromaia-like stuff.
And finally, after seeing yesterday's shot, Gary from mysteryme.com sent me a picture taken by his girlfriend last time they were in Blackpool. You can see the result here:

Certainly a nice and dynamic portrait. The tones and expression are great.

I really like this one, i think its the background that works for me (or lack of it) is that just a result of the flash exposure or did you do some work in photoshop to get it like that?
comment byMarina at 08:31 PM (GMT) on 1 August, 2005
haha... he wants to be an Aussie life-guard!? Good to know that ;o)
I really like the picture and the title fits to it!

Fine level of the details on his face, great light + nice depth of field (blurred hand). The background makes me focus on the object but I'd rather have something visible there instead of completely blurred dark. Anyway, I like it :).

This one made me laugh when I saw it. The seirous expression with the sunglasses and goggles combo is priceless!

Ditto to Dana. What on earth is this guy doing with speedo goggles on?

Nice shot, like Uncle Sam!

SteveO/bmoll: the background, after I'd adjusted the contrast, was mostly black bar a couple of grey splotches. These added nothing to the shot so I decided to darken them to the level of the rest of the background.
Ioannis: enjoying his performance ;-)

I like the craziness depicted in black & white. A good contrast of ideas.

This is my favorite of your latest non-family portraits, however, i enjoy better the "inanimate" stuff or the family portraits.

With him pointing at the camera, it reminds me of those old Uncle Sam wants you posters. I especially like the reflection you caught in his sunglasses. I do, however, feel a little uneasy with the top of his head just barely touching the top border of the frame. Otherwise, everything technical in this photo looks spot on. Well done.

But Aussie lifeguards dont use towers - at least not on the beach anyway.
He is so focused and serious. Great shot!

Great shot, full of impact. The DoF is great, give a real feeling of depth & it does actually feel like a chromasia shot, whether that's due to the toning, the composition or both I'm not sure, but this one is a winner for me!
I think it's a shame his "pointing" arm is covering part of his face - the part of his face I want to look at to see whats going on hehe. Despite that I love the tones and clarity of the image :)

I really like the way you have approached B/W in this shot. Often I find that a little color tone (used very effectively here) can convey mood on an otherwise ordinary picture (though your images are rarely that). Your photography has given me many ideas of things to try. Thanks!

As one of the people who publically admitted to not liking the portraits, I was kind of surprised to like this one a lot. I think the difference is that there's something going on in this picture. The odd double-glasses, the whistle, and the pointing all contribute to the sense that there's a story in progress here. Perhaps that's the root of my dislike of the close-cropped facial portraits. Those are nouns ("here is an object"), this one is a verb.
