So what's the betting that this image doesn't get as many comments as my last kite shot? ;-) That said, I do like this one too.

holy moly! freaky, and great colors.

comment by Mark [londonrubbish] at 09:39 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Cool image. Funny, great colours and again a wonderful sky . I can't work out which way is up. One hundred and fifty odd to go ;)

Wicked shot DJN - any news on the new sprog ?

comment by sAm at 09:47 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

You stumble upon some great photo opporunities, not taking anything from you as a photographer at all. I have to visit this site everyday ;)Excellent eye for great photo's...

comment by Jem at 09:54 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

What a fantastic kite! Great capture on the perspective Dave. Lovely colours too :)

comment by djn1 at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Thanks harmony.

Mark: I'm probably being obtuse, but 150 what?

John: no. The cat had kittens, but the sprog is still refusing to make an appearance. That said his due date isn't for another five days so I guess he could hang on for a while yet.

sAm: yes, fortunately for me there's normally quite a lot going on in Blackpool.

comment by John [shots] at 10:09 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

DJN: I think he was reffering to the amount of comments you need to beat the other kite shot.

comment by djn1 at 10:14 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

john: yep, you're right. Duh ;-)

comment by Mike at 10:15 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

I like this but think it looks better rotated 90 degrees anticlockwise.

comment by owen-b at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Those kites... where does he get those wonderful kites...?!

comment by m at 10:37 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

This is fab, but it's definately surpassed by SG-Blackpool If only because the Kite isn't as cool :-)

comment by owen at 10:56 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

brilliant. This photoblogging, it's a funny old game...

comment by RW at 11:14 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Great colours again. Was the ball there, or is that a PShop addition?

comment by Joe Lencioni at 11:17 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

What an interesting kite. I don't think I've ever seen a kite like it before. Very cool. Also, once again, nice dark sky. And very nice tones on the kite.

comment by Arthur at 11:53 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Brilliant kite! The sky’s pretty good, too...

:)

comment by nogger at 11:54 PM (GMT) on 10 August, 2005

Who makes these kites? That's what I want to know. And are they doing it next year?

comment by rachel at 12:07 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

This kite is crazy.

comment by A L I at 12:08 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

W O N D E R F U L

the shot, the idea, the subject, the background, the colours... everything about this photo is fantastic.

comment by O b e l i x at 12:09 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Crazy shot. Really like the idea :)

comment by Tristan Tom at 12:26 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

the ball looks fake to me because i see wires for the legs but not for the ball.

comment by Geoff at 12:52 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

yeah, I wondered about the ball as well. But I don't think that's djn's style.

Nice colours Dave. The sky is wonderful.

comment by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez at 01:07 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Well your cockiness is at an all time high, but that is certainly okay. Here's one more comment...

comment by Maran at 01:23 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Haha! Good catch!

comment by pfong at 02:25 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Great humourous pic. Made me smile.

comment by f.d. rahman at 03:28 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

hehe .. such an interesting kite. Great capture. :o)

comment by ezrider at 03:36 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

dude, you're a genious.

comment by kathy at 04:08 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

hehehe...this is a funny pic. i like the way it's rotated because it makes the pic more surreal. it's nice when you don't instantly know what's going on in a pic and you need to take a couple moments to figure out what's going on.

comment by Hiba at 04:16 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

this is so cool and freaky and unique and colorful.....

fantastic medley!

comment by su-yin at 05:47 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Wow. I LOVE this!!
This is so cool! The compostition is certainly different, and the vibrant colours against the blue sky just makes me feel...happy. :)

I was wondering if the ball was a kite as well? It makes sense to think that it is, but I can't see the strings...

comment by Carol at 06:59 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Did you just throw the ball up in the air at the right time?

comment by genedavinci at 07:03 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

i reckon this would be better if vertical :)

comment by Adriana at 08:40 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Great composition, it is very well framed and the constrast is superb. Love the depth of the sky's color

comment by aashish at 08:54 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

awesome shot! gr8 composition! really lovely!

comment by YETi at 09:15 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

I get the impression that your head is next to the kite? ;-) I would very much like to see the original image of the hole kite posted previously although this may spoil some of the magic?

comment by Reza at 09:35 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Gosh, what's hell of that, have you been in a festival !!any way i like it

comment by Emma M at 09:53 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Great colours and the sky is excellent. Think I'm actually addicted to your site now!..... talking of which (addictions that is) seem to recall reading that you gave up the cigs a while back, how's it going? I did the same on Monday and its not that easy!

comment by SteveO at 10:01 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Haha, fantastic kite, was the ball attached or was it thrown up in the air, i dont see any wires.

comment by Nicolas at 10:24 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Wicked.

comment by Tom at 11:55 AM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

This photo was taken at 4:17 PM and the SG-Blackpool kite photo at 4:02 PM the same day. Assuming the kites were flown on the same beach it's amazing how much less stormy the sky appears in only 15 minutes. Or are you toying with us?

Either way, the photos are stunning, as usual. Judging by the visible control lines I'd guess this photo was shot as a vertical and then rotated 90° counterclockwise. Great saturation and skillful masking and feathering. If this is lazy photography as some have indicated, I wonder how they define the time spent creating this overall beautiful work of photo art.

comment by djn1 at 12:24 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Emma: thanks, and the no-smoking is going ok. I've managed over two months without any cigs but am still using the nicotine lozenges.

SteveO: the ball was part of the kite too. And the wires were visible in the original but I toned them down a bit.

Tom: no, same beach, same sky, 15 minutes apart. This one was taken almost directly upwards (and was actually flipped vertically rather than being rotated) whereas SG-Blackpool was taken facing out to sea. Also, there was no masking on this shot just Selective Color, Hue/Saturation and Curves.

comment by Carol at 01:17 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Dah dah dah daaaaaaaaaah! The ball was part of the kite too! Thanks for explaining!

comment by naz at 01:37 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Is he being paid £ridiculous/week to kick that ball around as well? He can't even head the ball properly :)

comment by Ioannis at 01:51 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Great sky. I know it is not the subject of the picture but I am sure it adds to it.

comment by christine at 02:30 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

haha! hilarious kite! wonderful vibrant colors.

comment by Cory Simon at 03:03 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

I love this one, largely due to the subject matter. Kites are just plain cool, and soccer (uh, I mean football) is the best sport on the planet!

comment by Ariel at 04:14 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

haha, that's great. Fantastically vibrant and rich colors as always Dave!

comment by Glen at 04:52 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

this one made me sit back with a "WHAT THE???" LOL... great shot, love the perspective
thanks

comment by Adam at 05:14 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

I actually like this one even better, which says a lot because I really liked the last one!

comment by Vlad at 06:37 PM (GMT) on 11 August, 2005

Yeah, this one is nice too.

Excellent!

comment by ratty at 10:43 PM (GMT) on 14 August, 2005

your photos make me want to fly across the pond to see all that is Blackpool :)
[i wonder if Blackpool knows just how lucky it is to have YOU as it's chronicler...]

comment by Duncan at 05:15 PM (GMT) on 15 August, 2005

I would've liked this heaps more if it had been portrait as opposed landscape. Your ability to capture the image though is insurpassable. I don't know if that's how you spell it ;P.
