John and I spent a little over an hour today photographing my favourite structure and this is one of three shots that I'm happy with (though don't know which I prefer). I'll put the other two up over the weekend.
Update: the red and white dots – a couple of people wandering in the distance – have gone. They didn't add anything to the shot so I cloned them out.
Update #2: hmmm, seems my chemistry isn't up to much ;-) I've renamed this entry (from FeO2) as per the suggestions in the comments.

impressive and witty use of chemistry (in the title) ;)
i like the shot, but i'm a abit distracted by the red and white dot in the middle... that's probably just me though

s.hu: I did wonder about cloning out the figures, but decided against it. As for the title – it was all I could come up with so I'm glad it amused :-)

AMAZING, wonderful dramatic sky and great focus using depth of field. Such a lovely old-timey feeling to it.

This style and subject work so well together I can't imagine ever tiring of it. Beautiful work, again.

Great texture and a wonderful colour. The sky is also interesting.
Beats my work, thus far...

comment byIoannis at 11:49 PM (GMT) on 12 August, 2005
Good shot Dave. I'd like to go picture this structure again - when I get a car.
I would perhaps edit this person in the centre of the pic out of the shot. I know this is perhaps "too much editing" but one thing I particularly love about the shot is the blury coastline as in contrast with the pier, both of which are peaceful.
comment byLeo Chen at 12:23 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
The color is great here, tho I would agree with S.hu about the white dot in the center. It just seems a wee bit out of place. No biggie tho. Beautifully done.

Keep shooting those great photos.

Sorry to post two in a row, but I guess I should have said that I'm a big fan of 'close-up' photography - I'm new at all of this, so I don't know if this is considered a macro-type shot. Please correct me if I'm wrong. :)
comment byKeirAyres at 12:52 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
Dave this is a great contrast to your last range of pictures and I love it, the texture and sharpness is superb and the colours and contrast are beautiful. Great job even for you =P
comment byowen-b at 01:08 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
I viewed the photo after the people were cloned out (I wonder who they were and how they'd feel about being 'cloned out'!) and it's one of my favourite shots of yours. I love the apparent vignetteing, the richness and saturation of colours, the deepness of the shadows, the level of blur in the distance, and the sharpness of the detail in the foreground. I aspire to create shots so filmic and rich as this.
David, do you ever selectively add post-process lens blur into your images, artistically?
comment byKaarel Kala at 01:21 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
wicked shot. love it

Hmmmm. Well, I hate to disagree. But honestly, I find this shot to be fairly boring. It's not bad or anything, it just doesn't get me excited at all -- at least compared to all your other awesome shots.

I'm intrigued, I'd like to see the one with the people in and the difference between the two. Do you have a link?
comment byFred at 04:36 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
I like it alot. I do think there's some evidence though of selective blurring to accentuate the depth of field effect. For example, the strand of rope that has the beach as its background is out of focus, but the wood in the bottom right, just beyond the iron structure, is in focus, yet it must be further away than the strand of rope. I presume, Dave, you blurred the strand of rope along with the rest of the background?
Nice detail. At first glance I thought the ropes were some kind of creature!
comment bylisa at 08:04 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
Very nice shot, I'm not sure what it is about it but I really like it. I think it's the off-center/point of focus that I like.
comment by Arthur at 10:42 AM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
Love it. I really enjoy taking this type of shot myself, though this has much more contrast than I usually dare to put in mine! Yet more inspiration from Chromasia! :)
I like the almost vignetted effect the darkening of the sky gives to the top cormers, too. Look forward to the others.
Any sign of the new arrival?!

owen-b and m: the figures weren't recognisable as such - just a small white blob and an even smaller red one.
owen-b and Fred: the focus/blur is as-shot. As for the strand of rope over the beach: it is farther away than the wood in the bottom-right corner.
comment by m at 01:21 PM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
To add to the ever present debate on "processing" Can cloning out part of the image be really be compared to dark room processing?
comment byNick at 02:35 PM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
I don't think you have struck a pleasing balance between background and subject here - too much of the former. The main feature should be the texture of the rust and wood. Perhaps it would have been more effective if you angled the camera downwards and blurred the background more.
comment byJoe Lencioni at 03:11 PM (GMT) on 13 August, 2005
This is a very nice shot. It has a great variety of textures and nice colors. Vignetting = good. Colors = good. RE: cloning being compared to dark room processing, I would personally say that some of it is probably possible with dark room processing, but it would be very very difficult. But I'm no dark room wiz either. I just couldn't imagine how hard it would be to get it just right... that is, unless there is some sort of special equipment out there to help that process.
