I was going to put up a second shot of Peter today, but I think that the birth of my son, at 9.50am this morning, probably takes precedent :-)
Libby went into labour yesterday evening, and after spending all night at home, awake, was seen by a midwife at around 5.30am this morning. We had hoped to have a home birth, both our latest two having been induced, but it seemed as though things weren't progressing all that well, and Libby was really tired, so she decided to go into our local hospital at about 6.30 this morning.
I got the impression from the midwife that they'd probably give her some pain relief and that she'd sleep for a while and get her strength back. However, at just after 10.00am, just after I'd managed to arrange childcare for our other four, I got a ring from the hospital saying that he'd been born. Apparently it all got a bit traumatic at the end – his head was delivered but his shoulder got stuck – but they managed to wrestle him out, change his colour from blue to pink, and both mother and baby are now splendidly well ... and both are now fast asleep in bed.
Anyway, I'm pretty much spaced out, so am going to turn in too. Expect baby shots over the next week or so :-)
Oh, and I'll catch up with the comments on yesterday's shot over the next couple of days.
And finally, I really can't be bothered with all the usual EXIF data but this was taken with my 50mm lens, at f/1.8, ISO 400.
Update: it seems as though I've confused a few people by mentioning the name Peter. Peter was the guy in the jeep in yesterday's shot – we haven't settled on a name for our son yet.

I love shots of baby's hands; they're so small (and for such a short time!).
Congratulations, innumerable times!
Here's the advantage of a daily blog for viewers: no avalanche of "5-minutes old," "10-minutes old," "15-minutes old," "grandma holding junior," "Uncle Eddie and junior" shots! Once a day will be absolutely fine though. :-)

I've lurked on your site daily for over a year but had to post for the first time to send a huge congratulations today to you and your family! This beautiful shot brought tears to my eyes--his hands look just like our firstborn's hands did (for that matter, most of the rest of him looked like this as well. His skin peeled for days). From a mom who expected one girl and ended up with 2 boys, I can tell you that boys are indeed different but fabulous. Enjoy! And thanks for sharing your beautiful pictures and your beautiful family.
comment byMystery Me at 01:33 AM (GMT) on 24 August, 2005
Can I say congratulations without having to use the word 'congratulations'?...Nope. Congratulations to all of your family with the brand new Nightingale!
¡Felicidades! Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Congratulations! Well, there it goes -- the word everybody uses today. Honestly, though, he is beautiful. And I wish him, you and your family all the best for the future.
I also like this shot. I think it is great how you avoid the feeling that this is a "standard shot" and manage to post a great, beautiful baby portrait instead. In your place, most of us would probably be too overwhelmed to even get the camera out let alone land such a shot.
Again, congratulations and all the best.

Hi Dave,
Like many today, I've been following your site without commenting. This shot and the occasion it commemorates is however comment-worthy.
I just love the way that babies tuck their thumbs under their fingers.
I bet you dressed all your daughters in pink, perhaps the only stereotypical thing you do.
Many congratulations, keep inspiring.

Like other writers today, I normally visit your site without commenting but had to join in today to say:
CONGRATULATIONS
It would be harsh of me to say that I don't like the photo, but the wrinkly hands and skin tone remind me of a wizened old man rather than a new born. Maybe the colour balance on my monitor needs adjusting or more likely it was taken so soon after birth that he was still a bit blue. As for wrinkles what can you expect after a 9 month bath - I retract my criticism!
I have some very disappointing photos of my new born because I read somewhere that flash could harm their eyes when they are so young, and I turned up at the hospital with normal ISO100 film which didn't some out at all well in the delivery room.

I love the shot, particularly his little wrinkled hands. Makes me think of Shakespeare's seven ages of man:
"Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness...." etc
Glorious cycle of life.
Anyway, pseud-ish rambling aside, congrats again. It's huge news and I hope you're right chuffed.

Oh dave, this post brought tears of joy! He is beautiful, and I can't wait to see more of him.
I've missed your blog lately - I've been too busy being huge and hot (I'm now 34.5 weeks along and it's been over a hundred degrees F here all summer) to post photos much or surf or do much other than lay on the couch and whine. This picture is a gorgeous reminder of why exactly I'm going through all of this.
It's been said 200+ times but wow, congratulations.

Well, eight days late, and here he is :-)
I was going to put up a second shot of Peter today, but I think that the birth of my son, at 9.50am this morning, probably takes precedent :-)
I just knew he'd arrived by the lateness of your update ;) Massive congratulations to you and the wife Dave. He looks gorgeous! Can't wait to see more photies :)
congratulations for this new born and this shot.
(it's the first time i see the mention "no comment yet")
Congratulations man !
Congrat! Beautiful!
He's just lovely.
Many congratulations and what a wonderful shot to introduce your new son to the world.
Congratulations to you and your wife, Dave. What a happy beautiful day.
Congratulations! Great looking kid there!
OH MY GOD!!! I literally want to reach out and try to touch those precious little fingers...they look so real! Congratulations and best wishes!
Congratulations! You probably already know this, but the adjustment of the old siblings is the hardest part. That's what I am going through right now.
Congratulations.
A hearty Congratulations on the momentous event!
And sweet dreams to you and yours after a long wait...
So precious. Cute baby nose and then tiny old man fingers.
very cute baby and wonderful picture. many congrats!
Thanks so much for sharing this and others to come!
Fantastic shot Dave, brings back a lot of memories!
Congratulations and best wishes to you and your family.
This image is so beautiful. Congratulations on the birth of your healthy and lovely baby boy!
Congratulations!!!! How beautiful! Won't be long before you have him down on the beach, too. :)
Congratulations! He is so beautiful.
Congratulations! This is a wonderful photo, and different from the usual baby face shot for the first photo. Precious and lovely!
Wow - Congrats. Five kids you freakin nutter !
congrats to you and your family!
Congratulations David!
You now have one lovely son and one beautiful picture more...
And for the shot: once again you win about the point of view: so simple and just so unusual.
Many congratulations!! Beautiful image too. I'm sure this littlun will be the most photgraphed baby in Blackpool's history!!
Excellent!
C o n g r a t u l a t i o n s ! ! !
Wow... what a great shot... and I know the feeling, Mine is 29 days old today...
About the baby pics... bring them on!
It is always great to hear good news, and by the way... both my sons had trouble being delivered. It's a boy's thing, said the nurse.
Congratulations on your new addition!!
Congratulations on the newborn, David. I like his wrinkly little fingers.
C-o-n-g-r-a-t-u-l-a-t-i-o-n-s also to your wife. Looking ff to see more pictures of your new born son:)))

CONGRATULATIONS... 5...!!! WOW is this the first boy?
Yep, those pruny fingers tell the tale of a babe who hung out too long in the soup. Glad he finally arrived. Congratulations!
Congratulations!
Welcome to our world little one. Sorry for the mess.
Cute as all heck. Though, the old woman hands do disturb me a bit. Are all babies like that? or did he/she just have a bath?
Congratulations! It's good to hear that both mom and baby are fine. :-)
Congrats Dave.
Congratulations !! (and he shares my birthday, fantastic). I have been waiting for your news as my wife is 5 days late with our first child.

All the best to you and yours.
congrats Dave! Great news.
Congratulations and best wishes to you and your family.
Hi Dave,
Like many today, I've been following your site without commenting. This shot and the occasion it commemorates is however comment-worthy.
I just love the way that babies tuck their thumbs under their fingers.
I bet you dressed all your daughters in pink, perhaps the only stereotypical thing you do.
Many congratulations, keep inspiring.
Paul.
It's been said a few times already but just wanted to say Congrats to the whole family on the safe arrival! Looking forward to more photos! ; )
congratulations! look at those fingers. i wish you all the best!
FELICIDADES!!! (Congrats) Que Dios los bendiga a todos.
Wow, 118 comments already. Could break your record.
Happy Birthday Peter! Great name too ;-)
Take care and I wish you, your wife and family, lots of sleep and fun.
-Pete
Yippee. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Love the little handsxxxx Can't wait to see this little fella in the flesh!

Congrats.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Isn't it great that such a tiny thing can bring people together - 132 posts and counting....
Congratulations to you and your family! Best of luck to your new little one as he makes his way in the world.
Congratulations!

Congratulations to you and your wife. I notice your new son had wrinkles on his hands. That is something common to my family. Sorry I'm late, I've been out of town and busy. :)

Good Job!

SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
LOTS OF KISSES FOR YOUR BABY! :)))
Nothing new from me: Congratulations.
He looks adorable!
Save this page, print it out and give it to your son on his 16th birthday! I'm sure he'd like to know just how many strangers have seen his baby pictures :)
Congrats!
Congrats Dave !! I can feel the tender warmth whenever I see this picture of your son. Great picture.
