This one is another shot of Harmony and was taken about an hour and a half before yesterday's shot. She was sat on the floor in our bedroom watching the TV that's in front of our bay window – hence the catchlights. And with this shot I think that Harmony has made the transtition from being a pretty 'baby' to being quite a beautiful little girl, something that both myself and my wife have noticed over the last couple of weeks – even more noticeable now that we have another baby to compare her to.

Yes, I agree, she certainly seems to have grown up compared to the how she looks in the picture you linked to yesterday.
comment byRoger at 07:54 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
Nice. Not as magical as the last one but pretty picture anyway.
I often take pictures of my niece with the 50mm, this lens is really great on my 350D.

Beautiful!

Great picture Dave, and yes I can clearly see the 'growing up' she has done.
On a technical note: I know we have discussed this before, but I reckon that this portraits magic is down to that lovely natural light that flash (unless you can really direct it) can kill.
Anyway - this is stunning and one that would look great in print.

comment byowen b at 09:21 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
I agree - definitely something a bit more mature about Harmony here (all your children have such beautiful names!). I think it's in the suggestion that her look is more 'knowing' than it usually is in your portraits of your children. It's definitely the look of a child who secretly loves that she's the centre of her dad's attention... ;)
comment bygeorge i at 09:35 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
Lovely and sweet. And great DOF. Do you capture in B&W or convert from color? If the latter, a tip or two on your technique would be most appreciated (if you've got a minute between feedings, burpings and diaper changings...:-)
comment byTom at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
Wonderful image. As they used to say, "The camera loves her." In this case I think her expression indicates that she knows the love of the photographer as well. Good luck with your entire brood.
comment by Enike at 09:43 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
Stunning. Again her eyes draw you in. The lighting just works well. Of course, you have great subjects to work with. :)
As for her growing up, I can identify. I remember when my middle daughter transitioned from being babyish to being a big girl and it's bittersweet. This mom gets verklempt thinking about it. :)

Whew... I like everything about this shot. catches you off guard with the odd perspective, then draws you in, soft with a great depth of field. I like the reflection in her eyes too. And I wasn't one of the 186 congradulatory posts, so... Congradulations!
comment byAdriana at 10:05 PM (GMT) on 26 August, 2005
yup As I said yesterday she definetly looks more mature, I hope she's managing the baby situation ok. Love the perspective and let me tell you in my personal opinion she looks pretier now than before, although she was already prety. :)

Roger: yes, it's a great portrait lens.
John: yep, I agree, natural light is nearly always preferable.
owen b: yes, she's quite aware of the fact that she gets a lot of attention. Actually, because she's so cute, she gets away with a lot more than she should ;-)
george: I always shoot in RAW format than convert to black and white. In this case I used the Channel Mixer to emphasise her skin tones then the Curves tool to add the slight sepia effect.
Enike: I was thinking the same thing when I put this comment up, that I'm blessed with photogenic children.
Adriana and kikko77: all four of them are fine about the new baby, wonderfully so in fact. The older two are helping out looking after him and Rhowan is smothering him with kisses and small furry animals. Harmony is probably the least exctied of them all, but she's perhaps a little bit young to appreciate him. But she certainly seems to like him and isn't at all resentful.

Harmony is beautiful. However, I doubt she will appreciate the cowlick she has in the front of her forehead for a time, however, it is amazing. She is a forever beauty with the clarity in her eyes to strength of her stanch. She is showing you who she is and who she will be. I love this picture.

I have two granddaughters and I noticed how different they are. I appreciate a bit more of the uniqueness of each child. My first granddaughter did not take to me as well as she took to her mother’s mother, however now that she is two, we can hang out in bookstores (one of my fav way to spend an afternoon) and color together like it was meant to be. She wants to know what is what and how it got to be and most importantly how does one control what is to be. She has charm, beauty, and health. I hope she never ever finds the formula, as she is so much more that. My second granddaughter, who is eight months, She took to me like a moth to a flame. She likes to move, See things, sing, dance and just be. Her and are buds. Her mother’s mother does not understand and neither do I.
I love my g-daughters more than I can proclaim. I hope to understand them more and more each day.
It is such a privilege to be grandma.

Another lovely photo. Your daughter seems unaware of how cute she is - in start contrast to mine (19 mths) who has been trying on new clothes this afternoon, saying "pretty" to all of them and kissing herself in the mirror which we temporarily moved so that she could see what she looked like in the clobber. Very amusing!
