At long last we've managed to come up with a name – Finley George. Well, to be more accurate, we've reconciled ourselves to sticking with calling our dark haired son Finley, which means "fair". Anyway, he now has a name and I've finally managed to take a half-decent picture of him (though wish I'd included just a little more of the scene to the right of the shot), so I thought I'd put this one up today. And I know that the style is a bit of a cliché – soft-focus baby shot – but his complexion is still a bit dry and spotty so I've spent quite a bit of time photoshopping him prior to his début ;-)

Precious sweet darling! Beautiful face, cute little shirt, good name.
Gorgeous shot of a loved little baby.
I wish I had a photoshopper in my life to learn whatever complicatedly technical skills are required to photoshop (I am far too technically lazy for such a thing), because you manage to create such human essence with whatever it is you do. I have a feeling it would be there with or without the photoshopping though. I can't imagine this photo not having beautiful spirit, which is what I love about it.
comment by joan at 12:40 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
Makes me want to hold the baby cheek to cheek. Ah, the memories! The smell of a new baby!
How's the family coping?
comment byMandie at 01:16 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
Did you notice? The curl of his blanket almost looked as if we were viewing him from his mom's eyes, with him lying against her belly. If it hadn't been for the stitching at the top of the picture, I would have assumed that as skin.
Beautiful boy, nice British name! ;-)
comment bygeorge i at 01:25 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
Finley George... Finley's fair, but "George!"...now there's a name! (not that I'm biased or anything... ;-) Going by his shirt, I s'pose his nickname is Tigger?? T - I - DOUBLE GG - RRRR...
comment by Enike at 01:39 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
Finley George is an absolutely beautiful baby, Dave. I really like the name, too. You must be very proud. As for cliché, if someone complains about this being cliché that's, well, cliché. ;)
You did a great job with such shallow DOF. At f1.8, it's so easy to screw it up if the intended focal point is even a hair off.
comment byJesse Watkins at 01:40 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
I like his name. Good choice, Mr. and Mrs. Nightingale.
comment byLeo at 02:04 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
Nice.I Iike the soft tones and the soft focus effect and the short DOF.
You're lucky, in a couple of years to get an infocus shot of him you'll need to go @ 1/2000 shutter speed. ^_^
Best of luck.

comment byMikelangelo at 02:29 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005

Why did you wish more room on his right though? It's in good balance. If anything, I'd give more room on his left, but in sum, I think it's good as it is.
Oh and all the best to the newcomer!

comment byKevin at 03:47 AM (GMT) on 4 September, 2005
This shot is way better than "half-decent". Cute kid! Congratulations again! And I wouldn't worry about this being a cliche shot. Everyone has to have at least a few soft-focus baby shots in the album. That and bathtub shots (which I just got done taking of my 2 little nephews for my sister). I'm sure you'll have plenty of chances to take some different shots. He'll be doing all kinds of funny stuff before long. :)

Maria: Finley means "fair warrior" and George, I think, means, "farmer". A better explanation for the choice is that we liked Finley and George was my Grandfather's name.
joan: the family are fine. Libby's still a bit tired, which is to be expected, but the other kids have all been great with him.
Mandie: that hadn't occured to me, but I see what you mean.
Leo: yep, I don't imagine he'll stay still for long ;-)

Very cliche, but newborn babies aren't quite as perfect as some people like to believe, so I appreciate why you've given it the soft-focus effect. Lovely names too.

A warm welocme to your 1st boy, I think the name Finley may prove a good choice.
The description fair warrior may have nothing to do with colour but the quality of his fight and with that many girls in the house he'll need to be a fair warrior!
:-)

Jeff: Hi Finlay.
Finley: ... Sigh.

Beautiful baby. Gorgeous eyes. I just want to say though that I think its sad to work on a photograph in order to get perfection. He is perfection. Blips and milk spots and bruises and dry skin and all. He has been on a long journey getting here and should wear his "scars" with pride. He's gorgeous. Reality is better than good. It beats blurs and soft focus any day.
Welcome to the world Finlay. I hope you see it in sharp focus.
