I haven’t been able to visit Chromasia for a few days, so have been catching up...
Hope all the family are doing well!
Great pic! Very ‘Chromasia’! I love the way tilt shift can make a shot already having perspective undulate and twist across the page.

You've made great use of the lensbaby - I need to get mine out more :) Great colours and composition :)

wow. interesting colours you've used here.

One good reason for me NOT to get a lensbaby and one good reason for me to play with selective color tool. I just can't get my head around the focus (lack thereof) issue...makes me feel drunk. Love those colors though!
comment byVelviaPix at 12:35 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Dave,
This is wonderful creative image.
The selective color is superb.
I have been thinking on getting the lensbaby 2.0 but I am not sure I will be using it enough... Is this effect not easy to accomplish with PS?
I just don't want to spend the money for something I can probably teach myself in PS. What is your opinion?
Thanks!
comment byEric at 01:03 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
I really like the image. A little creepy to tell you the truth, but I definately still like it.

I usually like the Lensbaby effect when there's at least a little bit of something in the shot that's focused, but here I can't find anything that is. Am I missing it? I do like your color combinations, though.
comment byFrank Lynch at 02:09 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
It looks like lensbaby is a challenging tool to use, or at least my goals would have been different from yours. To me it seems as if the wrong parts are in focus - - nonetheless, I applaud your continual efforts at experimentation, and there's really no reason you should only share your successes. Let's all learn together!
comment byFrank Lynch at 02:10 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Judith, I think the grass about a foot ahead of the daughter is focused.
comment byBeth at 02:10 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Can someone please explain what a lensbaby is?
comment by Sharla at 02:56 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
A really great composition. It is very eerie. A sorta alien-plant, lizoid-perspective kinda shot. Of course, none of that would be there except for your daughter's action and expression. Put this one in your post-processing pipe and smoke it! Does this indicate djn is off on a new creative bent?
comment byFrank Lynch at 03:00 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Beth, a lens baby is a lens at the end of a flexible tube, basically - - try to imagine a flexible periscope?
comment by rusty at 03:50 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
The black holes that are her eyes and mouth turn this from eerie to downright creepy. It kind of looks like a "what's going on in his head" scene from a movie about a serial killer.
Not that that's a bad thing, if that's the effect you were going for. :-)
comment by Andrew at 04:51 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
I love it!
comment bythefotokid at 05:15 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Ha ha, when I saw this my first reaction was "lensbaby"! Great abstract, love this shot.
comment byLeo at 08:03 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Ahh the lensbaby. Which one do you have the 2.0? or the original. I've been batting around the idea of buying one, I mean I guess I could postprocess to acheive teh same look but it just isn't the same.
Nice colors, is the vigenetting part of the lens baby or was that through post processing?
comment bySandra at 08:49 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Im amazed by your photography. It is amazing.
comment bySteveO at 09:03 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Interesting effect, i would have liked to have had the face in focus if that was possible, cool colours though.
comment byling at 09:06 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Cool picture!
You know, the longer you stare at it, somehow, the picture looks as if it's wobbling. Cool eh?!
Cute kid you've got there!
comment byrw at 09:10 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Quite a cool effect, but still I dont think I want one...
comment byNeil at 11:01 AM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
hmm, I love the fact that you're experimenting & 'pushing the envelope' but this one just doesn't do it for me, I think I would have liked Rho in focus rather than the grass (I guess that ain't easy with a lens baby & a fast moving child tho)
It does make my eyes go funny looking at it! Oh and the top right corner of sky looks almost like you've appled an inner shadow or something, probably to do with the shape of the cloud.
comment bytobias at 12:00 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Um, could you explain how the "selective colour" tool works? I love the way the focus undulates through this image. Of course this is all due to the camera lens, not the photographer. Great shot, I think it good that Rhown is out of focus.
comment bydjn1 at 12:30 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
VelviaPix: yes, you could get much the same result in Photoshop as you would with a Lensbaby, but it wouldn't be anywhere near as much fun.
maria: this is the effect you get with the Lensbaby.
Judith: the grass at the front of the image and the fronds at the back are both in focus - near enough - but I quite like the sense of movement in this one.
Frank: I did take some shots where Rho was in focus but they didn't give the same sense of movement as this one.
Sharla: I'm not sure where I'm heading at the moment. Time will tell.
Leo: I added a vignette.
tobias: the Selective Color tool is intended for use with CMYK images and allows you to selectively alter the reds, yellows, cyans, and so on. It also allows you to globally change the highlights, midtones and shadows. Basically, you can set the amount of cyan, magenta, yellow and black of each of these colours.
comment byDavid Albers at 01:42 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
I would give my right eye to watch you tone one of these images. (I shoot with the left)
comment byChristopher at 03:03 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
This images is so striking! Very dreamy but dark. It makes me want to get a lens baby.
comment bytobias at 03:37 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
I must admit that you do seem to be a very good advert for lensbaby. The movement in this shot is great. I will try the CMYK. See what happens. Cheers Dave.
comment bytobias at 03:42 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Right, sorry. Just tried it. Mode>CMYK. Then went image>adjustments>selective colour. I adjust the various colours and unlike levels or whatever nothing seems to change (you normally get a preview, as the adjustments occur). How do I apply this selective colour?
Sorry, I am not that hot on CS.
comment byandrew at 03:56 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Wow, the colours are perfect and you really used the Lensbaby for good.
comment bydjn1 at 04:45 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
tobias: sorry, I wasn't very clear. You don't need to convert to CMYK, just use it in RGB mode. What I was trying to say is that the Selective Color tool is particularly useful for CMYK images, but there's certainly no need to be in that mode to use it.
comment bysanjin at 04:46 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
it is a nice use of the lens, but somehow most of your children photos are in a bit dark and gothic style. i personally prefer your nature photos.
thanks for making comments and letting us know how you post process your photos. very useful.
comment byMike at 07:30 PM (GMT) on 7 September, 2005
Neat shot, David. I have a lensbaby, but I'm always reluctant to use it because my eyesight is so poor i have a hard time finding a decent focus spot. But this shot is nice because it shows you don't really need to have a centered focus spot to have a decent picture.
