I guess this one is a companion shot to stepping lightly. Well, it's Camilla's feet again, and they're both in mid-air. And this is one of the shots I mentioned yesterday, one of the ones I wasn't particularly happy with. Today, after some selective toning of the sea, I'm a lot happier with the way it looks (though my wife thinks I've overdone it). Oddly, this shot reminds me of something, it has a feel of something familiar, but I really can't work out what. Maybe a television advertisement, or just a visual style I'm familiar with; I don't know. Whatever it is it has a slightly dated feel, as though it's reminiscent of something from quite some time ago. Anyway, feel free to free-associate anything it evokes for you ... or not ;-)

Oh, and I've now answered the comments from Saturday's shot. As usual there aren't enough hours in the day.

You have a way of bringing out beautiful wood grain in your photos.

This photo doesn't remind me of anything in particular, but it makes me cringe a little bit. I have visions of those feet hitting the slippery post and a painful disaster ensuing.

comment by Monika at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

beautiful colors!

you can almost taste that ocean.

comment by Brandon at 10:13 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

I agree. The colors are wonderful, just like in all of your other shots. I would like to see this shot without the fee, but I think that's just me because feet gross me out. I love the colors of the sea, and perfect lighting. I haven't seen the original, but I don't think it's over done at all. Great work.

comment by Jessica at 10:23 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

I love the blue of the water contrasted to the colors in the feet and the wood. The blue is very soothing!

Just the type of shot I would have loved to have captured. Perfectly timed. I adore this shot.

comment by Joe P at 10:37 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

This is awesome... the colors are great, the motion is perfectly frozen, and it even makes me a bit nervous...

Hacia tiempo que no pasaba por aquí, no sé muy bien el motivo. Tras ver esta foto prometo no faltar más a la cita. Eres toda una fuente de motivación, en serio.

Fantastic! The colour tones really give this shot extra life and warmth - (regardless that the sea temp there would probably rattle my bones somewhat). It looks inviting. Golden feet in the frame remind me of summer holiday fun, idle carefree moments ... joy.

comment by Leo at 11:36 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

YES! the colors are back. I like the composition on this shot. I can't tell if the feet are dangling off a pier or jumping or whatnot. But above all else I like the nice blues that form the background.

comment by ~flying cow~ at 11:59 PM (GMT) on 12 September, 2005

i love the composition. the picture has a sports shoes advertisement feel to it... i love the colour of the sea in it but i find something odd in the colour of the wood, cant quite point out what... l
lovely shot though!

Nice picture! Brilliant.

comment by Neil at 01:17 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Beautiful colours!! Hey, are you sure that's not David Blaine's feet?? ;-)

comment by Kevin at 01:29 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

geez! I don't know how you do that with the wood colors all the time. It looks great though, especially against that water. The water is a different blue. Looks great.

comment by regularjoe at 01:55 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

I think it has a stock photo feel. Maybe that's why it feels dated. Stock from 10-15 years ago often exhibited this type of light, color and saturation. Not a whole lot of leeway in terms of those elements. Today's stock however is much different. There's much more artistic license (blown highlights, etc..). All in all, not a bad thing.

That said, the composition is excellent. A unqiue view that we all should be seeking out as we wield our cameras around...

comment by mehdi at 02:10 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

as perfect as one can get.

comment by lisa at 04:19 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

I'm curious as to what time of day this was shot at... it has a dusk type of feel to it but now I'm wondering if that was really it because you mentioned you altered the colour of the sea.

oh, and was she jumping?

comment by Helen at 05:58 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Go the colour! those feet just look perfect, I am thinking of either a sports shoe ad or a sony ad, where it had people jumping in it.

comment by Navin Harish at 06:46 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Awesome

comment by Kristina at 07:18 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

I'm going to have to go with your wife on this one, unfortunately. Sorry David! Keep up the good work recently though!

comment by Rob at 09:03 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Beautiful! Love the colorus, the sea and the wood go so well together. Good job

comment by Isabelle at 09:52 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

THe feet coming down/going up? reminds me a bit of Monty Python ... But the overall look is of the Cheltenham and Gloucester adverts, with the boy swimming in the sea/shipwreck imo.

You take very commercial photographs but I have seen some here which are purely 'you' and I think you should abandon the commercial and follow your heart.

These feet would be better on the wood, with one foot dipping down - 'exploring' if you like ...

I'm curious - How often do you take a photograph and have absolutely no PS work done on it whatsoever?

comment by stefan at 10:05 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

It makes me feel a bit uneasy - partly because the post looks slippery but perhaps also because this is the standard way of framing a shot of someone who's hanged themselves. Because the action has been frozen the legs look a bit lifeless - a bit of motion blur would probably helped keep them alive.

It's a nice picture though.

comment by SteveO at 10:25 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Fantastic, i dont think the toning is overdone at all, looks really good.

comment by pierre at 10:39 AM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Wow, the details are amazing
The sea colors look OK to me

comment by owen at 12:10 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Excellent timing, and I thing the colours in this one look nice and natural.

comment by fotek at 12:27 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

my first thought was also, that someone has hanged himself.

comment by Mikelangelo at 01:43 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Very neat. Skin tones work very well with the wood color! Groovy contrast between water and figure.

I first thought jumping... then I thought landing... then I realized it's neither. This person is merely floating. Levitating, if you will, until you get the shot you want.

Very kind of them to do that for you. ;-) Thanks for sharing your work.

comment by Viking054 at 02:40 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Hmm... Definitely looks like she's been hanged... Creepy...

comment by Dan at 04:02 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

I don't think you've overdone it. I think you've brought out the colours that needed to snap. The contrast and hues are great, and the saturation is also fitting. Not to mention I like the photo... I think it's a cool capture.

comment by Mike at 04:39 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

David I don't think the colors are overdone at all. They look great. I don't think that it looks like there are feet "hanging" or anything like that. But as a parent myself, what I AM thinking is "oh my gosh I hope she doesn't slip and fall when she comes back down on that wet piece of wood." That is the disconcerting part to me!

comment by djn1 at 04:43 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

Thanks everyone. As for what was going on: she was jumping up and down as the waves came in and the wood was wet, but it wasn't slippery, so I think she was quite safe. Well, as safe as kids ever are when they're doing this sort of thing :-)

comment by jim at 07:38 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005

My wife and I love this one - so many of your photos make me want to live by the sea. My wife's aunt lives near to Blackpool, in Cleveleys, and we often visit Rossall Beach, but we've not had the kids jumping up and down as per this photo...yet!

Wonderful, as ever! Thanks.

comment by Yvette at 09:08 AM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005

Oh this one is better than present photo! This one should be published in the photography magazine and I think this is really fantastic! But when I saw this, my very first thought was: " Is that woman's feet? I hope that she didn't hurt herself after jump off the slippy metal?!" Was she holding on something? WOw..nice shot! I always leave comments on yours but you never visit mine so I guess You don't have time =-)

great shot!!

comment by sirin at 08:42 PM (GMT) on 15 September, 2005

I commented before I saw your comment, David. ... Hmm, I don't know how you couldn't like this shot. I absolutely love it but I tend to overdo it with color and contrast sometimes, as well. I guess, it's a preference. ... I'm not very intelligent with my commenting today...so I'm gonna just stop. Love your blog. You're on my Favorites list.

I think this shot is great. The colors in particular...even if they look overtky bright , I think it enhances its beauty.
