Maybe it's just me – overtired, a bit too much to do, that slightly 'over-stretched' feeling that can leave you jumping at shadows – but there's something about this shot that I find disquieting.
Anyway, I'm putting this one up early today as I need to chill out this evening.

Not sure about the disquieting aspect of this one, I don't get the impression of a large drop off the edge maybe if the feet were tilting over the edge?. I like the addition of the stones though. Fantastic site though David I'm not surprised you're feeling stretched with a newborn to keep you busy and appeasing all your fans on this site. Have a glass of whatever on me and enjoy the evening.

There's an odd clash of old versus new, man versus nature, but in an understated way. Weathered wood; rusty bolt; scarred pebbles beneath the "weight" of humanity dressed in what appears to be brand new shoes and jeans.

I like the it. The same theme from the one before. The blues work well. The composition is nice, but I prefer the one before more. The motion of the previous shot appeals to me a lot more.
comment by Edd at 05:47 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005
I think you've tried too hard: The right half of the photo is great but the placement of the stones in a row on the left smacks of an overly prepared photo, lose the stones and you get your soul back. Detail in the wood is spot on.
comment bydjn1 at 05:58 PM (GMT) on 13 September, 2005
Edd: I can see your point, but this wasn't staged. It's a shot of my niece trying to work out how to negotiate her way past the stones that she'd previously lined up on top of this groin.

I prefer yesterdays shot Dave, but I do like this one too. Hope you enjoy your rest this evening, and mother and baby are doing well too.
It must be a lot of pressure trying to keep the quality day after day, shot after shot... Go on, take it easy tonight, and let the rest of us catch up :-)

Do you know...
My first impression on seeing this one was that it was shot in a STUDIO!! (shock)
It's something about the blue background that I just can't see anything past that it's a blue backcloth - cool.
Have a good one :)

the contrast between the blue and the wood/legs is a little stark. makes the foreground look like a trick-photo, like those cheesy pictures they take at the universal studios, with fake backgrounds. looks cut-pasty.
other than that, the detail in the wood is superb, and i like the composition itself.

I don't know if you processed the sky at all Dave, but it's too punched up for me. It seems like a studio shot with a blue backdrop. It would be great if it had some of your signature clouds (but then I hate it when people suggest things that are out of your control), or if the sky was a little more muted.

Hope you manage a nice chill out this evening :)

I just love this. Thanks for all the great work. I wish I could get my photos to have as much "punch" as yours always do!

Can you, or anyone else here please tell me how he got so much stuff in focus with f4 aperture? Looking at the picture I would have guessed f5.6 at least, but more like f8.
Anyone?
I'm going to check back here, but if someone could email me a response...kgeary83@comcast.net that would be great.
thanks

Too JC Penney catalog. It's the blue background. Nothing really interesting anything either, no offense to your niece (we only see her taste in shoes).

Kevin, I won't presume to answer for the photographer, but, the answer to your question is, all of the elements in this picture are on the same focal plane, therefore all elements will be in focus-in other words, there is NO depth-of-field to be out of focus-if there were another element, about 12"-14" in front of, or behind these main elements you would notice a fall off in the sharpness of these other elements. Does this make sense? Anyway, another fine image.

I think this is very nice but feels like it is too showy or fake because of background. I prefer the background being a natural like backyard or beach. Other than than, everything looks nice. Stones? How about plastic duckies instead?

I usually love your pics, but I don't like this one: too organized, too dark on the top right, too much of a blue sky, not enough movement (I loved yesterday's post!), too much of a studio photo (I know it isn't...).
And I don't see the disquieting aspect either...
Anyway, take it easy today and tonight and you'll come with a great shot tomorrow again!

This photo is really neat. However, if one foot was leaning toward the edge and looked like it was about to fall, it would have been a little more better. Still, it was very nicely done.
