This is a great shot, David. Very cute. I am a big fan of square compositions, too.
comment bylisa at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
Initially I liked this right when I loaded the page, but then two seconds after I was bothered by the heavy blur and seemed to dislike how her one eye is the only thing in focus.
comment by:::ARMOKS::: at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
Hmmm...I like the shot...though not as good as others...
Just a question....what was the lighting source???
I can see a window reflection in his eyes......what else lighting did you use???
comment byjoe_ob at 10:51 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
Did you do the lighten, darken blur thing here? Since reading one of your entries a while back I tried it a couple of times and it seemed to work well. Sometimes it is bit too much but sometimes it is very good.
This is nice. Funny expression, now you say it she does look fed up.
comment bydjn1 at 11:05 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
mike: yes, I like square cropped shots. I should probably do more of them.
lisa: yes, the DoF is a little over the top, but I was playing around with trying to get shots where just her eye was in focus. I think it worked quite well for the other shot, but is probably a bit extreme for this one.
ARMOKS: just the window.
joe_ob: no, not exactly. I duplicated the layer, blurred it by about 15px, and set the blend mode to overlay. The area aronud her right eye was just duplicaed and set to overlay mode; i.e. no blur. This has much the same effect as the 'lighten/darken' thing, but also increases the contrast and saturation of the shot (though the latter isn't relevant in this case).

Nice expression. I think I'd like it a little better if the left eye was not so blurry.
Curious about the background. What is it? Looks liquid...
comment bytobias at 11:43 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
Actually, I've thought about this a bit more and considered the scene. "No, Daddy says look up. Come on, do it for love."
I could do with some children of my own as child models that I could bully relentlessly...
Seriously, that look really says it all. I think you should lay of this particular model, or raise the pocket money by 100%
comment byNeil at 11:44 PM (GMT) on 14 September, 2005
Well, I like it, but then I don't think I've seen any of your shots of the kids that I didn't like, your relationship with them is what makes these images work as much as all the technical stuff! Great expresiioon, great composition! What no toning??? ;-)

Maybe I'm weird, but I'd take a shot like this over a more "normal" portrait anyday. Portraits are great, but more often than not, they only show the person wheras a shot like this captures personality.
The unexpected composition lends a lot to the image as well...

How could you not be captivated with this child's expression? It's like she/he is competing for a million dollar price pose. This shot perfectly describes how sweet it is to be a child.

I've been new to your photoblog and I love your pics overall, but when it comes to close ups of people there is one thing that you often do that I dont quit like: you blur/soften too much of the foreground.
I think both of her eyes should have been in focus at the very least. Just keeping her right eye in focus destroys too much of the rest of the picture.
The head shot of the old lady from Sep 10th is another, albeit milder, case. In her case, her shirt collar was too blurry/soft, detaching her face a bit from the photo. August 18th was a similar case.
The shot of your newborn was another case where the overall photo was too soft. It's strainful on the eyes when you looking at that photo, trying to retrieve details from it.
The September 1st and 2nd shots were nice and sharp with the proper area (background) blurred. Hope my feedback is welcomed.

As for the extreme DoF: I think that if I were to shoot this one again I'd have closed down the aperture a little, not least because it would have revealed more of her wondeful expression.
Miguel: no, it's not the same one.

I like this shot. It is quite a nontraditional "portrait" if one may call it thus. It is quirky yet insightful, and has a hint of Picasso in the composition and DOF (plus a great expression by your daughter). The monochrome is an excellent choice.
Ciao.
