I've been doing some work for the Arts Council over the last month or so, the final bit of which finished yesterday – providing a documentary account of the Catalyst Conference that was taking place in Liverpool (and Manchester). And the reason I mention that is that I suspect this shot wouldn't make a lot of sense unless you know that it was taken for a specific reason. Most of the stuff I took was of people milling about, some shots of the presentations, and so on. But this one was an attempt to provide an iconic shot of the conference – in this case a delegate wearing one of the conference satchels.

Hmmm...seems to be showing three times!? ; )

My fault. I've deleted the other two.

I dunno... Perhaps because it's a commissioned specific shot it does nothing for me. In fact it looks very blurry, over saturated... Interesting colouring on the ground though. But otherwise a bit odd - if you hadn't said that was a bag, I'd have wondered. It's too big in the shot I think.

Ummmhhh... good color, hard light....
I Like the photo.

I like it. It looks a bit voyeuristic, I hope she knew you were taking the shot... otherwise it could be perceived as creepy! ;-)

She has lovely calfs...

Absolutely stunning

Certainly achieved the iconic look.

I tried to leave a comment and it was lost (after much contemplation on my part, I might add). Cannot wait until you upgrade/change provider. I'm not trying again. In a word though, "dislike". What is with the blue tarmac?

The hue of the ground is eye catching. It blends well with the bag.
I have to say asides from the colors nothing else catches my fancy on this shot. I like your other photos much better.

Not sure that this shot is very successful. It's seems rather over-processed, and I suspect that it's not interesting enough to be a strong iconic shot of the conference. In some respects the bag would be more interesting by itself; you have two different elements in the composition, each competing for attention. Not one of your better ones.

Very nice perspective :-)

I don't really like this shot. The subject matter seems bland. Feels like I'm waiting in line behind somebody, something like that. The writing "Catalyst" is such a focal point of the shot, yet it seems to have nothing to do with anything else in the shot (that I know of). Then there's the asphalt pavement that just further worsens the feeling of standing in line behind someone in a parking lot or something. Ugh.

I would be happier with this if the logo was more sharply in focus than the legs. I like the shapes and the simplicity. I knew what it was immediately, but not why, so within it's special context this photo works for me

Not one of my most popular efforts then ;-)

Does my Catalyst satchel look big in this? :-)

I actually kind of glazed over this statement in the summary: "But this one was an attempt to provide an iconic shot of the conference – in this case a delegate wearing one of the conference satchels."

In response to that, I think a full body shot would have done so much better for that purpose. Since we can't see the torso, we have no idea if the lady is intently looking at something, maybe working on a notepad, or just twiddling her thumbs in a bored fashion. Although with a back shot you wouldn't be able to see facial expressions or gestures she is making with her arms (this would probably be a good thing so you aren't saturated by the look of the person), you would be able to get a much better feel for her demeanor.

I like the subject, but not really the colors; they distract. Converted to black and white, I would love this shot.

Not sure that I like this. Its a bit bland in terms of its subject matter, even taking into account that you are concentrating on the catalyst icon.

comment by Enike at 08:13 PM (GMT) on 19 September, 2005

I like it because it gives me that Diana/Holga-esque feeling with the colors and composition.

Nice perspective, nice colour and nice shoes!

Increased saturation makes it so 60s :)
I don't mind high contrasts..moreover..I like them :)

I love everything about this shot except the catalyst bag (or more specifically the writing on the bag)...however, then I read your comment (that it was commissioned), and it now makes sense why it is there....
The colors are great. And in combination with the shoes and the skirt....it gives the whole image this 1950s touch.

This is actually one of my favourite Chromasia photos. I love the colour, the clear-cut-ness of the image. Great icon.

(And it was quite obvious to me that was a bag. What was all the fuss about?)
