Very dramatic shot Dave! Those are some waves! I love the monotone feel to it :) Great shot!

A really great shot - I wish I could take photos like you do :)

Even though this was shot in colour, it's would look kick ass in B&W I would think. I love the different textures in the photo. Not much else I can say as I can't spot any errors (I don't want to be to nit-picky). Cheers.
comment bymilou at 09:40 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005
Excellent sense of movement and subdued power.
comment byLeo at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005
I like the concept, but not the execution. The colors are muted, there's no major contrast, there's no point of focus. It's still a good shot, by all means, it's just that I don't think it's up to your usual lofty standards.
I think I might've slowed down the shutter speed a bit more, to give the waves a sense of motion, rather than the frozen look.
comment byLyle at 10:05 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005
Stonking - as opposed to Leo's viewpoint, I far prefer it with the water frozen like that.
As with all these things, it's subjective as to which we prefer - for myself, water over rocks/streams should be a slow shutter speed, stuff like this or lock gates etc. should be a short shutter speed. No idea why, it's just the way I like it.
comment byDaniel at 10:10 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005
One of my biggest concerns with some comments is that people just take the whole image idea the wrong way.
Personally i think images should trigger some emotion in the viewer and not make the viewer worry about the technical aspects of the pic (colour, contrast, point of focus)
If you look at some of the best photos of this century, they all have 1 similar thing in common and it's emotion
I guess to coin an old cliche, beauty is in the eye of the beholder
This image for me works, for the simple reason it makes me homesick
comment byStuartR at 10:42 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005
This is a nice image of crashing water, and the mono conversion suits it well.
Regarding the discussion about shutter speeds and moving water... I tend to think that the blurred water photo is something of a cliche. I think freezing the action can still suggest movement, and in this case I think it does so even more than a slow shutter speed would have. This photo has an explosive look that would be lost if the water was blurred.
Just my tuppeny's worth! ;-)

I have been lasting for something like this for a while. A pure geometric shot, minimalist, however filled withemotions (I say that as I feel the freze of water here) and life. I like the three material's (water, stone/concrete and metal) flirt in it a lot.

Freaky and frightening. It looks like someplace that the bad guys would make you walk down the stairs and take your last breath.

I have been looking at your site everyday for about six months and this is my first comment. I have loved several of your images in the past but this is the first one that I felt I absolutely had to comment on. I'm not gonna get technical or specific, I will just say that my immediate reaction was intense. I absolutely love this shot! really wonderful and unique. Reminds me a bit of MC Escher

Your shot and John's shot are so complementary, nice ones.
comment by Joe at 06:27 AM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005
Absolutely love this shot. I don't think there's a need to take this to B&W. It's so close already. Like your mind is running so intensely that you are simply concentrating on the stairs and water, not thinking about color. The framing of the shot feels a bit cramped, which adds to the whole intense feeling again.

Fantastic, i love the way water is so powerfull, when it wants to move, there is nothing going to stop it. Very nice.

Great shot - I like it - I like the way the water looks in places really dramatic and in places like soapy washing up water - you can see the different currents and stuff. Plus I love the hand rails.

I think the photograph is good, it has a sense of rush to it.it's as if disaster has struck. but it does need a little more emotion in it. viewers need to feel mooved by the photo, it's got to really mean something to you in order for it to make a difference with the viewers.

On another matter: my ongoing apologies for chromasia's poor performance. All being well I should have moved servers by the end of next week.
