I was going to put this one up at some point, but having seen John's latest shot I thought I might as well put it up today.

On another matter: my ongoing apologies for chromasia's poor performance. All being well I should have moved servers by the end of next week.

Very dramatic shot Dave! Those are some waves! I love the monotone feel to it :) Great shot!

comment by xeo at 09:24 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005

A really great shot - I wish I could take photos like you do :)

comment by Thinh Q. Thang at 09:32 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005

Even though this was shot in colour, it's would look kick ass in B&W I would think. I love the different textures in the photo. Not much else I can say as I can't spot any errors (I don't want to be to nit-picky). Cheers.

Excellent sense of movement and subdued power.

comment by Leo at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005

I like the concept, but not the execution. The colors are muted, there's no major contrast, there's no point of focus. It's still a good shot, by all means, it's just that I don't think it's up to your usual lofty standards.

I think I might've slowed down the shutter speed a bit more, to give the waves a sense of motion, rather than the frozen look.

comment by Lyle at 10:05 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005

Stonking - as opposed to Leo's viewpoint, I far prefer it with the water frozen like that.

As with all these things, it's subjective as to which we prefer - for myself, water over rocks/streams should be a slow shutter speed, stuff like this or lock gates etc. should be a short shutter speed. No idea why, it's just the way I like it.

One of my biggest concerns with some comments is that people just take the whole image idea the wrong way.
Personally i think images should trigger some emotion in the viewer and not make the viewer worry about the technical aspects of the pic (colour, contrast, point of focus)

If you look at some of the best photos of this century, they all have 1 similar thing in common and it's emotion

I guess to coin an old cliche, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

This image for me works, for the simple reason it makes me homesick

comment by StuartR at 10:42 PM (GMT) on 20 September, 2005

This is a nice image of crashing water, and the mono conversion suits it well.

Regarding the discussion about shutter speeds and moving water... I tend to think that the blurred water photo is something of a cliche. I think freezing the action can still suggest movement, and in this case I think it does so even more than a slow shutter speed would have. This photo has an explosive look that would be lost if the water was blurred.

Just my tuppeny's worth! ;-)

I have been lasting for something like this for a while. A pure geometric shot, minimalist, however filled withemotions (I say that as I feel the freze of water here) and life. I like the three material's (water, stone/concrete and metal) flirt in it a lot.

i took some beach shots recently.
none come close to this.
i totally agree with peter (emotions and elements).
fabulous!

Freaky and frightening. It looks like someplace that the bad guys would make you walk down the stairs and take your last breath.

I have been looking at your site everyday for about six months and this is my first comment. I have loved several of your images in the past but this is the first one that I felt I absolutely had to comment on. I'm not gonna get technical or specific, I will just say that my immediate reaction was intense. I absolutely love this shot! really wonderful and unique. Reminds me a bit of MC Escher

great contrast in white water versus stairs. railing is also great, as is the composition.

For some reason as son as I saw this I had an immediately thought of "the end of the world" type scenario. Good shot.

Ótimo click!!! Me fez repensar nos desastres q estão acontecendo no mundo... O jogo das cores , q apesar de ser coloridos parecem preto e branco, gez um efeito lindo!!!!

I can hear the water just by looking at this...

comment by lisa at 05:11 AM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Your shot and John's shot are so complementary, nice ones.

comment by Joe at 06:27 AM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Absolutely love this shot. I don't think there's a need to take this to B&W. It's so close already. Like your mind is running so intensely that you are simply concentrating on the stairs and water, not thinking about color. The framing of the shot feels a bit cramped, which adds to the whole intense feeling again.

comment by SteveO at 08:55 AM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Fantastic, i love the way water is so powerfull, when it wants to move, there is nothing going to stop it. Very nice.

comment by John Duncan at 09:44 AM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

A reference to Kate Bush?

comment by Michael at 01:37 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

That is such an awesome shot. The colors and content really do it for me.

Very crisp and refreshing photo. I like the deep, dark colour.

comment by owen at 08:04 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Very dramatic waves - those steps certainly don't look very inviting! Excellent shot.

comment by Raffi at 08:31 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Dramatic indeed. Loving it.

comment by Charlotte at 08:48 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Great shot - I like it - I like the way the water looks in places really dramatic and in places like soapy washing up water - you can see the different currents and stuff. Plus I love the hand rails.

comment by djn1 at 08:58 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

Thanks everyone.

comment by djn1 at 11:36 PM (GMT) on 21 September, 2005

John: yes, it was a reference to Kate Bush, well spotted :-)

comment by april boyette at 04:36 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I think the photograph is good, it has a sense of rush to it.it's as if disaster has struck. but it does need a little more emotion in it. viewers need to feel mooved by the photo, it's got to really mean something to you in order for it to make a difference with the viewers.

comment by Guillermo at 10:27 PM (GMT) on 25 September, 2005

Great pic. Soooo powerful.
Keep on like this :)

comment by Stefan at 02:05 AM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

Awesome shot! Looks very dramatic with the water and the color tones.
