It's not often that I put up two shots, but on this occassion I couldn't decide which version I preferred, so feel free to take your pick.

On another matter: John and I are off down to London tomorrow evening for the Europe Photobloggers meetup and will be back on Sunday – I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone who's going to be there. I'll put up Friday's shot before I leave, but wont be able to post Saturday's as chromasia's server – in addition to all the other problems – won't let me future post entries, so I'll have to put Saturday's shot up on Sunday. I could leave a gap, but I'm determined to post an image a day this year so will have to cheat a bit given the server is refusing to play ball. Anyway, look out for plently of shots of photobloggers and London next week.

Wow 2 photos :) Personally I prefer the b&w one - it feels like it has more depth! Have a great time in London Dave - I would have liked to have come along but i'm busy shooting a band this weekend :)

comment by andy at 09:45 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

Definitely the frist one. The second one seems a little flat to me.

Have fun at the meetup! Looking forward to the photos.

comment by Jaynee at 09:46 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I much prefer the color shot - somehow more dramatic than the black/white (which feels like a messed up Excel graph to me). LOVE your photos!

comment by kikko77 at 09:51 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I also prefer the colour one. Amazing!

comment by tobias at 09:53 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I like the colour and the processing but not the subject. I prefer the colour one of the two, purely due to it being... in colour.

comment by tessa at 09:55 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

colour :) watch your step!

comment by mike at 09:56 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

To me the fence seems to blend into the backgroung on the colour image, particualry at the bottom of the frame.
Where in the black/white image is seems to stand out more.

Personally I prefer the balck/white.

comment by StuartR at 10:23 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

Hmmm... I like them both, but I think I'm leaning slightly towards the mono version, I think the background looks softer in that one.

comment by Hennie at 10:30 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I like the black and white - a powerful shot of something so ordinary!

comment by ::: A R M O K S ::: at 10:34 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I love the Blacck and white one outright...It has a great depth and goes very well with the overall theme of this photo...The broken wire mesh gives you a feeling of accident...or old age...and stuff like the..Black and white complements that...

comment by dp at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

The black & white one is a little too abstract to be fathomed in black & white! The color one definitely :-)

comment by miklos at 10:46 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

Dave. Why don't you let someone else (such as your wife) post for you? Even if she doesn't know how.. It can't be all that difficult. Just a thought.

comment by joe_ob at 10:47 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

Great photos. I like the colour one most as the fence seems to stand out more. As always, the depth is smashing.

comment by payam at 10:50 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

beautiful! very creative. it looks like a doodle on a picture
i like the colour more... it creates more contrast between the fence and the background

comment by VelviaPix at 10:58 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I am someone who truly loves color, it is more than just a visual concept for me... but color is light, and to se a monotone image can sometimes have a more "colorful" meaning than a full spectrum image because of how that light is presented to the viewer.
I see these two, and I like the first for very different reasons than the second, but I cannot decide on either.

Nice pics.

comment by Thermo-crime at 11:07 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

colored. amazing.

comment by RobW at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I have been going back and forth between the two. I am with you. I definitely cannot decide.

comment by Ken at 11:23 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

Like the first shot but can only view an orange and yellow 'gasometer' that you shot in February when I click on the link. Where's the B&W shot that other people are viewing?

comment by Jarod at 11:31 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005

I like the color more also.

comment by VelviaPix at 12:05 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Ken... scroll down.

comment by dan simpson at 12:08 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

color :)

comment by Rock at 12:11 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Interesting looking bunch of wires - it reminds me of a wire frame sculplture. I prefer the pop and zest of the color version. The black wire in the color version just screams there's an artist standing just off to the right of the frame.

comment by EOS Chaos at 12:11 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

The colour image gets my vote too. Hope to be at the meet this weekend.

comment by pfong at 01:46 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

both are good, but I prefer the simplicity of the b&w.

comment by Ed { tfk } at 01:56 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Colour, but I love colour, so I'm a bit biased. But go colour, you get the great ranges of yellows, greens and cyan. The B&W works well in terms of the sharp contrast between wire and background.

comment by nogger at 02:24 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Well, if I had the money I'd come to the meet and take a shot of your arse. :-)

Unfortunately, I spent all my spare cash at the R&B Festival at the end of last month. :-(

Have a nice weekend. Looking forward to the pics and any reports of the fun.

comment by regularjoe at 02:25 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I think the element color adds alot to the contrast and between the organic grass and the inorganic fence. The element of shape emphasizes the similarities between the organic and inorganic. What's left is a very nice composition that has a great deal of visual tension. Two main elements that are the same but different...different but the same...

comment by kevin moscon at 02:35 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

The color one- (bw is nice too though). I love this little series, you have a great eye for these things! Nice attention to detail.

comment by Viking at 03:05 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Interesting concept, the whole 'nature reflected' thing... The criss-crossing fence and the criss-crossing grass... Very clever, I like it. I think I prefer the mono version, as it provides a sharper contrast between nature and man-made.

comment by jcyrhs at 03:28 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I prefer the coloured one. Totally understand the situation where you remain undecided about two types of processing. However, the structure stands out much nicer in the coloured version. It tends to blend too much into the background for the B&W one. Just my 2 cents worth...

Have a great time in London!

comment by Kimmie at 03:30 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

The depth of the B&W is amazing. The fence feels 3D. I say "Captured"!

comment by Magnus von Koeller at 03:37 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

It's funny -- I cannot decide either which one I like more. Nice shots though. :)

comment by lisa at 04:06 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

i like the first shot better.

comment by Shane at 04:14 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I prefer the first shot better. The way the extreme black of the wire is on the b&w shot makes it look like somebody took an black line marker to the photo in photoshop.

comment by Bert at 04:18 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I prefer the color shot.

comment by Guilherme Pinto at 04:27 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I also vote for the color one...

comment by joan at 06:59 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Both are gorgeous.

comment by ps at 07:00 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I preffer the color one ;]

comment by kathy at 07:27 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

the color one. i think the fence thingy or whatever it is stands out more.

comment by Leo at 08:18 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I like the color one.The fence stands out more, and the sky behind it is beautiful.

Of course, the monochrome one has its merits as well.I just wish the sky had more contrast in the monochrome version. Make it stand out a bit more.

Either way, this is a wonderful photo.

comment by Kalei at 08:49 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Now this is a great shot i love the idea!!!

comment by pierre at 10:07 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Incredible detail.

Thanks everyone.

miklos: normally, I would ask my wife to post the entry, but my MT installation is behaving very poorly and it often takes several attempts to get an entry up, including deleting duplicates, rebuilding the indexes, and so on. It's not worth the stress ;-)

comment by Steve at 05:29 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

Love this shot - beautiful contrast between man made and natural textures. Interesting how how psychology changes in mono. . think you need to see green grass etc for this to work best so prefer colour one! Great work at the moment.

comment by A.R. at 09:23 PM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005

I prefer the b and w's tones. To tones really add interest to the subject. The colour image leaves me thinking "a tangled fence, okay nothing special". The second one has that surreal effect that captures the imagination!

comment by *~*flying cow*~* at 12:19 AM (GMT) on 24 September, 2005

ooh fantastic. i cant decide if i like the starkness of the black in the top shot more or the monochrome of the second.
both shots are terrific!

comment by zoomvienna at 09:57 PM (GMT) on 26 September, 2005

Nice framing here Dave... -T

comment by Ioannis at 12:48 PM (GMT) on 9 October, 2005

I'd be in a dilemma too here.

comment by Christopher Shipman at 05:24 PM (GMT) on 22 October, 2005

This is excellent, but I like the duotone version of this shot much better. The duotone version really emphasizes the form of the wire and compares/contrasts it to the form of the grasses, without any distracting colors. Wonderful!
