It's not often that I put up two shots, but on this occassion I couldn't decide which version I preferred, so feel free to take your pick.
On another matter: John and I are off down to London tomorrow evening for the Europe Photobloggers meetup and will be back on Sunday – I'm really looking forward to meeting everyone who's going to be there. I'll put up Friday's shot before I leave, but wont be able to post Saturday's as chromasia's server – in addition to all the other problems – won't let me future post entries, so I'll have to put Saturday's shot up on Sunday. I could leave a gap, but I'm determined to post an image a day this year so will have to cheat a bit given the server is refusing to play ball. Anyway, look out for plently of shots of photobloggers and London next week.

Wow 2 photos :) Personally I prefer the b&w one - it feels like it has more depth! Have a great time in London Dave - I would have liked to have come along but i'm busy shooting a band this weekend :)

Definitely the frist one. The second one seems a little flat to me.
Have fun at the meetup! Looking forward to the photos.

I much prefer the color shot - somehow more dramatic than the black/white (which feels like a messed up Excel graph to me). LOVE your photos!

I also prefer the colour one. Amazing!
comment bytobias at 09:53 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005
I like the colour and the processing but not the subject. I prefer the colour one of the two, purely due to it being... in colour.

colour :) watch your step!

To me the fence seems to blend into the backgroung on the colour image, particualry at the bottom of the frame.
Where in the black/white image is seems to stand out more.
Personally I prefer the balck/white.
comment byStuartR at 10:23 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005
Hmmm... I like them both, but I think I'm leaning slightly towards the mono version, I think the background looks softer in that one.
comment by Hennie at 10:30 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005
I like the black and white - a powerful shot of something so ordinary!
I love the Blacck and white one outright...It has a great depth and goes very well with the overall theme of this photo...The broken wire mesh gives you a feeling of accident...or old age...and stuff like the..Black and white complements that...
comment bydp at 10:38 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005
The black & white one is a little too abstract to be fathomed in black & white! The color one definitely :-)
comment by miklos at 10:46 PM (GMT) on 22 September, 2005
Dave. Why don't you let someone else (such as your wife) post for you? Even if she doesn't know how.. It can't be all that difficult. Just a thought.

Great photos. I like the colour one most as the fence seems to stand out more. As always, the depth is smashing.

i like the colour more... it creates more contrast between the fence and the background

I am someone who truly loves color, it is more than just a visual concept for me... but color is light, and to se a monotone image can sometimes have a more "colorful" meaning than a full spectrum image because of how that light is presented to the viewer.
I see these two, and I like the first for very different reasons than the second, but I cannot decide on either.
Nice pics.

Interesting looking bunch of wires - it reminds me of a wire frame sculplture. I prefer the pop and zest of the color version. The black wire in the color version just screams there's an artist standing just off to the right of the frame.

The colour image gets my vote too. Hope to be at the meet this weekend.
comment bypfong at 01:46 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
both are good, but I prefer the simplicity of the b&w.
comment byEd { tfk } at 01:56 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
Colour, but I love colour, so I'm a bit biased. But go colour, you get the great ranges of yellows, greens and cyan. The B&W works well in terms of the sharp contrast between wire and background.
comment bynogger at 02:24 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
Well, if I had the money I'd come to the meet and take a shot of your arse. :-)
Unfortunately, I spent all my spare cash at the R&B Festival at the end of last month. :-(
Have a nice weekend. Looking forward to the pics and any reports of the fun.

I think the element color adds alot to the contrast and between the organic grass and the inorganic fence. The element of shape emphasizes the similarities between the organic and inorganic. What's left is a very nice composition that has a great deal of visual tension. Two main elements that are the same but different...different but the same...
comment bykevin moscon at 02:35 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
The color one- (bw is nice too though). I love this little series, you have a great eye for these things! Nice attention to detail.
comment byViking at 03:05 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
Interesting concept, the whole 'nature reflected' thing... The criss-crossing fence and the criss-crossing grass... Very clever, I like it. I think I prefer the mono version, as it provides a sharper contrast between nature and man-made.
comment by jcyrhs at 03:28 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
I prefer the coloured one. Totally understand the situation where you remain undecided about two types of processing. However, the structure stands out much nicer in the coloured version. It tends to blend too much into the background for the B&W one. Just my 2 cents worth...
Have a great time in London!
comment by Kimmie at 03:30 AM (GMT) on 23 September, 2005
The depth of the B&W is amazing. The fence feels 3D. I say "Captured"!

I prefer the b and w's tones. To tones really add interest to the subject. The colour image leaves me thinking "a tangled fence, okay nothing special". The second one has that surreal effect that captures the imagination!

This is excellent, but I like the duotone version of this shot much better. The duotone version really emphasizes the form of the wire and compares/contrasts it to the form of the grasses, without any distracting colors. Wonderful!
