Overcoming technical difficulties doesn't necessarily make a shot better, but I was quite pleased that I got this one. It was shot from a balcony with my camera wedged against a rail and, at 1/8s, just manages to be sharp enough to show her rather jaded expression.
Anyway, I'm off to London in a little while – see you all on Sunday.

I'm not certain that I like this one in it's entirety. The picture seems unbalances with the shining flor on the right detracting attention from the subject on the left. The speaker stack behind makes such an abrupt division that at first I thought I was looking at two seperate photos you had put up side by side. I'd be tempted to crop out the right hand side of the photo completely and concnetrate attention on the wonderful expression on her face.
Oh dear, criticism on the first comment!. Maybe other visitors will like it better :~

Another cracking shot Dave, given the circumstances. I love the colour of her hair matching that of the stage. She clearly had a long day!
Enjoy London.
ps Nice to be first to post.

Too bad you couldnt get it a bit sharper, but her expression is great.

I commend you for posting an undoctored photo (or, at least not heavily doctored).

Sharon Osbourne has obviously seen one too many X-Factor auditions

I like this one myself. I like the way there are just 3 main colors and they look great together.

This isn't Dave's usual type of photo either. Candids have a completely different feel and intent. I like the photo.

She really has got a touch of the Sharon Osbournes about her!
Great expression, she needs a cuppa tea!

Nice framing and contrast between this expressive lady and the wooden texture.

Nice moment grabbed. I love the color of the floor and hair...good stuff.

I think I understand what the first commenter meant about the right side of the frame. When I first saw it I thought "wall," because the grain of the wood doesn't give much of a perception of depth. However, once I realized that those were speakers it started to come together for me.
Dittos on the Sharon Osbourne comparison (a much younger one though).

Like the colours - works well for me.

Wow, 1/8sec? At 163mm? Not bad, though it's still quite conspicuously "unsharp". That said, I agree with Scott et al about the grain of the wood not matching the perspective -- it's just kind of a confusing background. The speakers also create an abrupt interruption between the path the eye follows through the frame and the woman's face, also creating confusion. All that said, I like the color combination and the expression, of course, is priceless.

poor thing. her expression is miserable!
comment by Geoff at 01:44 AM (GMT) on 24 September, 2005
I don't think the expression (which is basically the heart of the shot) is that spectacular that it makes up for the technical faults of the photo (blurriness, distracting composition). It would have been a good shot, but close doesn't make it good. I think it's one of the poorer shots put up in the last few months. Enjoy your weekend.

Great shot! Why is it that you usually don't like to use ISO speeds over 100? Is it because of the noise? The picture would probably be much sharper if the ISO was at 400-800. :o)

great shot....she has had a long day for sure...Very good capture under the circumstances...
It took me a bit to realize what the backgroud was. It is a bit confusing, but I like it. Great expression on her face.
Event planning can be a bitch.
Gotta love tech crew. It's mean but I thought Ozzy was yelling out "Sharon!".
Thanks everyone.
