I'm not sure who this is, so if anyone does know please let me know. She attended the Friday night social event of the Europe Photobloggers meetup last weekend, but I didn't catch her name. And if you're interested, Chrys has put up a shot on Flickr of most of the people who attended the meetup.

On another matter: I've decided that the process of adding titles to all my images is becoming too difficult – there are just some for which no title comes to mind, at least not easily, so I'm going to number some shots instead.

And thanks for the discussions over the last couple of days, I thoroughly enjoyed them.

Yes I prefer this sort of shot. The interpretation seems a little more visible. I think she liked you. Sher-wing!

Actually... If anyone knows who this is, please let ME know!!

Very nice candid portrait.

Lovely motion in this one. The eye wonders to all the right spots.

This is the sort of shot that'll turn a photoblog's Comments section into a gender census.

Cute,,,really

comment by Chandru at 06:25 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

A wonderful portrait indeed. Monochrome makes it even better.

comment by Annabel at 06:25 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

This is a beautiful shot!

In fact, I have been loving your stuff for the past few shots .... Getting back to what you do best and ditching the commercial stuff... Much more 'you' I think ....
Thank you!

That girl is pretty.

I've had just the same problems with the titles. Everytime I post something I'm having a hard time finding titles, and I'm not sure what to do about it.
But your way of just starting adding numbers might be the solution. I always thought it would look wierd if I did that, since I had titles before, but maybe it isn't. What do you think I should do? You wouldn't feel copied if I started doing the same?

Btw, great photo. Looks great in B&W. Didn't like the background though. A bit disturbing.

comment by djn1 at 07:14 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

Kevin: pretty? Is she? I hadn't noticed ;-)

Kjetil: no, I don't mind; go ahead. A lot of the time I can come up with a suitable title, but for those shots where I can't I thought the numbering made sense. As for the background - it's just an open sash window.

comment by Ninu at 07:34 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

What a catch with that lens of yours, great smile and the smoothness just comes out even better with the angle.

comment by john [shots] at 08:14 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

Nice photo Dave - it has a very fresh look to it and that perfectly natural appeal.

comment by John Enriquez at 10:06 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

I don't care about the background. The focus is definitely on her eyes, which I must admit are very attractive. Doesn't anyone else feel the romance and teasing mystery that the girl leaves in her deep glance?

comment by nogger at 10:24 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

I'm not too sure about that left eye, to be honest. Looks a bit odd. It's too dark against the brightness of her nose for me (on my monitor). Seems to pop out of the picture a bit. Other than that it's great.

comment by Leo at 10:49 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

The hair covering her eye is great. I like the softness of the skin tones. Good contrast between background and subject. I just wish you could see more of her other eye. It kinda creeps me out seeing just a part of her eye staring at me behind her nose.

comment by RobW at 11:09 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

A beautiful smile; I love the way her hair curls under the smile to frame it even more.

comment by joe_ob at 11:24 PM (GMT) on 2 October, 2005

I'm not sold on her eyes either. Has one of them been whitened? It looks a little too unreal for my liking.

comment by Christopher Guess at 12:00 AM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

I love this site, it just helps me with portrait ides as soon as I start to overdo them. I'm a photojournalist (well learning to be one, working for a college rag) and it's hard to keep it original, thank you for the inspiration.

Oh and if anyone has a mac, I wrote an automater script that downloads and sets the background to the picture of the day from here. if you wan want it feel free to email gues *AT* wisc *dot* edu

A beautiful photograph—Stunning, actually. There is something about her smile and look that draws the viewer in.

Because I am sure she'd enjoy her photograph as well, I hope you succeed in finding her name .

comment by Juwan at 01:55 AM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

another stunning and beautiful portrait. i just love the way you capture people whether it be child or adult you always capture them beautifully, your portraits make me work harder.

the girl in the photo is sally, she came to the meetup with ben (of www.bedlamcreative.com).

comment by Geoff at 07:50 AM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

Nice portrait - very cute model :) That wisp of hair over her eye and that impish smile does it for me!

But is that really you in that group photo? Full beard and a funny hat? Come to think of it I don't think I've ever seen a self portrait from you that wasn't a vague reflection. Here's a request - a self portrait of the man himself? If you think about self portraits in the way I do then the answer will be a flat no, but it'd certainly be interesting to see the man behind the lens.

Dave I think you should may be think about a forum here at Chromasia? I think it's a shame that the disscussions over the past two days will get lost under hundreds of other posts. New visitors to the site would have to search some 600 + images to find these posts but with a forum they only have to look in one place.
I know the worries people have with forums and the administration etc. but I've only see decent people visiting this site and taking the time to post. Being new to photography I really would like peoples opinions on equipment, techniqes, great prices, etc. I think there is many an opportunity here and more which could all be housed under one forum.

Thanks

comment by chris at 09:38 AM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

yes indeed, this is a lovely shot. Of course, you did have a very good subject...

When I look I'm half expecting the smile to get broader. Great shot :)

comment by John Duncan at 11:15 AM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

On a completely different matter, my wife and I have been having a debate on the pronunciation of this blog. Can somebody enlighten me? I say it rhymes with Malaysia, my wife pronounces it with two 's'-es, like 'ass'.

There's money riding on this.

comment by Paul Courtney at 01:01 PM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

Dave,
Another beauty. Her eyes are hypnotic and mesmerising, and the implication on the smile is there for all to see. The curl of hair framing the mouth is great. Lucky Ben!
I agree with Yeti about the forum.
John D, I'm with your wife, hope you don't mind!

Am hoping djn will side with me, of course....:-)

Perhaps you should have taken a little more time getting to know the people around you.

comment by John Duncan at 01:31 PM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

I like to give my pictures titles of songs (which probably has copyright issues, but what the hey). And I know you're not averse to it yourself David (cf Under Ice). So now we know her name.....

Mustang Sally
Lay Down Sally
Wake Up Sally
Long Tall Sally
Sally
Walk With Me Sally

etcetera etcetera etcetera.

Is Sally the most popular name to write songs about?

comment by Carol at 02:36 PM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

"You say tomayto, I say tomarto..."
I say chrom-asia, like the continent at the end. Had never thought of pronouncing it a different way!

comment by jcyrhs at 03:00 PM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

I LOVE THIS PHOTO!

I dun know...perhaps it's the smile. Even the weird eye didn't affect my liking for this picture. You've posted a fair bit of portraits these days but i always thought paul or john got some better shots than you...=) this time round... wow!!!

comment by djn1 at 08:09 PM (GMT) on 3 October, 2005

Thanks everyone.

joe_ob: yes, her left eye was lightened a little, but only because it looked more oddly lit in the original.

fredrik: thanks.

Geoff: yep, that's me, but it's a goatie beard. The hat is because I have so little hair and hate getting the top of my head burnt when it's sunny. As for the portrait: ok, I'll think about it – I haven't done one for a while.

YETi: I'm going to be changing servers over the next couple of days. Once that's done I'll have a rethink about having a forum. In the meanwhile, there is a search box on my archive page.

John Duncan: chromasia, in our house at least, is pronounced crow-may-zeea ('ee' as in feet, 'a' as in bat) with the emphasis on the second syllable. So it looks like you win ;-) And, re your second comment - good titles :-)

ghost: pardon? Were you there?

comment by mark at 12:40 PM (GMT) on 4 October, 2005

Hi Dave

Another quality shot, love it. Can I ask you something? I've just ordered myself a 20D (coming tomorrow - woo hoo!) and would like to know...for your B&W shots, such as this one, do you use the in camera settings for B&W and the coloured filters or carry out the conversion later on in CS (or whatever software you use, I seem to remember seeing you use CS though)?

Thanks
Mark
