As I stood there waiting for this shot I hoped that some particularly photogenic or oddball character would walk past, but they didn't, and I guess it doesn't matter too much as I like this shot anyway.

hey dave, which program do you use to edit your pictures?
comment bydjn1 at 08:15 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
maria: if you mean 'edit' as in organise and convert from RAW files – C1 Pro (and occasssionaly iView MediaPro). If you mean what do I use to post-process them - Photoshop CS.

What an perfectly awesome shot! I love how you set this up. Of course I've always loved your work.
comment bySanjin at 08:44 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
very nice. i wonder if it would be nicer if it was b/w?
it's still great as it is...

Nice shot again. He almost looks like he's about to walk into himself!
Wow, nice shot! Great composition too. I wonder which part(s) were cropped?
Also, I have had this question that I have been wanting to ask you for a while, which of thr RAW apps do you prefer? I see that you use C1 Pro, is that better than Photoshop's RAW converter? Thanks.

This one put a big smile on my face, just love what you've done here. How many of us, in the same place would have seen the opportunity and got this result, not too many i think. Good stuff and well spotted. - [Chuks]
comment bydjn1 at 09:06 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
SK: I trimmed a little bit off the right side and the top of the image, not much though. As for C1 Pro: yes, IMO it's better than CS – better shadow detail, marginally less noise, and better colour correction tools. Where it comes into its own though is for batch processing.
comment byemma at 09:11 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
Very nicely spotted... normally reflections tend to be slightly on the duller side which doesn't show on this. Was there any editing involved to enhance the reflection in this photograph?
comment byLeo at 09:15 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
Interesting shot. The reflection makes you look twice. Good composition though.
very creative and interesting John Dave...I agree that I was in your place I may have not seen this shot
comment by Bryan G at 09:27 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
What I really love about this shot is the man's left foot! You get a great sense of motion, the feeling that as soon as that foot comes down he's going to propel himself into his reflection.
comment byjohn [shots] at 09:29 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
Lovely shot Dave, well spotted and executed.
Now then - I think that Photoshop CS 2 is now the best for Raw Conversion - plus if you add the Doctor Brown Scripts for batch processing it is very efficient as well.
Anyone using photoshop CS2 and bridge should download Dr Browns scripts and use them.
All my opinion of course - I personally find C1 confusing and expensive - CS 2 is brill now because it has curves crop and much more.
Someone said recently that photoshop was now a plugin for Camera Raw.
Hee Hee.

It's about time! ... for another reflection shot. Your attention to composition in the viewfinder is meticulous, as usual.
Sometimes I catch myself wondering how long you waited for a particular photogenic moment to approach. It's obvious that your successes involve more than your excellent eye, but also much patience.
I suspect you had to put a touch of effort in the reflection to bring it up to the other half. I did wonder for a moment if this shot was similar to your original post of "downward spiral #2" (.../0502282045_clean.php), but I could quickly dissuade myself of that notion by examining the "seam."
comment bydjn1 at 09:50 PM (GMT) on 5 October, 2005
Sharla (and dp): no, I learnt my lesson with 'downward spriral' :-) As for the reflection: no, I didn't have to alter it in any way - all the work to the image was applied equally to both sides.

Thank you for your helpful response Dave. I guess a copy of C1 Pro comes with a Canon 20D, which I'll be buying soon.

Awesome shot...I was thinking you could crop the left to take out the reflection of the pole, also, the image isn't really balanced with the left uncropped...the door on the right is closer to the edge than it is on the left. But, perhaps you wanted it that way--just a suggestion.

I have been looking at your site for a long time, and never posted. Your work is brilliant, and I've been inspired several times. My friend in Montreal told me about your site, and this shot made me actually post. The fact that this reflection looks like a mirrored image in photoshop, yet is not, apparently, is phenomenal. An odd character would have been nice, but the composition steals the show here. Keep up the good work.
Ciao,
