Apologies for a) not joining in the conversation on yesterday's shot, and b) posting this a bit late, but I've been stuck at work all day and have only just got in. So, rather than write much about this one, I'll add something to yesterday's comments.

I love the horizontal nature of this image Dave. Everything just seems to flow to the right in lines. The colours are bold, and the composition very appealing too! Appropriate the fisherman was wearing such a bright coat to stand out in the image ;)
comment byMark at 10:36 PM (GMT) on 12 October, 2005
The color of the fisherman against the rest of the image is great.
This photo has a very tense calm mood to it. . .

Beautiful.
Love the blues, the contrast with the ground, the composition, the blending of the elements and the timing. The wave is in place, the man is in position...
Dave, I would hate to single out this image, but I cannot help to make it my favorite.
Excellent.
comment by SJ at 10:43 PM (GMT) on 12 October, 2005
That's a gorgeous shot. It's so dynamic and has real depth. I could look at it for a long time. I agree with velvapix; a favourite.
comment bytobias at 11:02 PM (GMT) on 12 October, 2005
I like this image. The colours are amazing. The blues. The jagged brown going into the sea is a wonderful shock of colour. For me though, this has a lovely balance. The title could simply be "Fishing". Another litlle note. I like the way the water seems to lap around the figure seemingly engulfing him almost.
comment byMike at 11:16 PM (GMT) on 12 October, 2005
Wonderful, beautiful shot, Dave. The blues are fantastic, and the figure of the person in red is a great point of interest. Really nice.

Lovely composition! Interesting photo processing as you have some interesting EXIF data from the camera that suggest so.

not that the picture isn't beautiful, but the landscape is so captivating. I don't get to travel much, mostly just around the Southern U.S. Nothing like this :(

"If you see red...."
:)
The composition is wonderful, with the waves hitting the sand in the centre of the picture and the placement of the fisherman. I think the sky is slightly overdone, as it keeps drawing my attention away from the foreground, but that's just nit-picking. Lovely shot.
Out of interest, where was it taken?
comment bylisa at 12:28 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
this photo gave me a sudden flash memory of this old book I read when I was in elementary. I don't remember the title but it was something about a lampfish I think, a rare one. Ok.. this comment was so pointless without the title of the novel. haha. But thanks for the flashback. :p
comment byJohn Enriquez at 12:44 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
David, how do you get the sky to be so contrast-y? The best I've got is a circular polarizer but it doesn't add up to the infinite depth your skies have!
comment by pj at 01:09 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
DAVE, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS. BLEW MY MIND AWAY. Was wondering, how did you take this picture as in did you use a wide-angled lens? or did u just crop the picture?

comment byMysixstring at 01:29 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
Great picture. The mood is definitely there. However, there is something a bit disconnected with the man in red. The fact that there is a fishing pole in the shot and he is not interacting with it detracts from the image. It seams more like an off moment than just him contemplating the scene. Impressive picture none the less.
The question does beg to be asked...
How does this fit in with the "ambient photography"?
comment bybob at 02:15 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005

Lovely Dave. Serene, calm colours, wonderful composition. The only negative I feel was beyond your control. Take away that fence or whatever itøs called, and I think it'd be even better. They are the right colour but they draw my eye too heavily.
And mysixstring, not every shot is trying to fit into the Photography For Airports theme, just selected ones. Look at the top of the comments under the exif data. Dave puts his pictures into categories. This is not in the photography for airports category.

comment by hannan at 05:35 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
The picture has something unnatural about it. May be the clouds are a bit too dark.
The mood set in the picture is too sombre.
May be a little white in the clouds.
comment bysAm at 08:36 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
This is an excellent shot, the complementary colours, the composition and mood which shows a lonely person contemplating the days ahead (dejection maybe) IMO...

Long time viewer first time post. Great shot. For me this captures the grandeur of Morecambe Bay perfectly. Cold & bleak but at the same time awe inspiring. The clouds may have been tinkered with but it does really feel like this.
comment byLeo at 10:14 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
Nice. I love the composition. Everything seems to flow towards the dude in red.
Colors are great, I might've slowed down the shutter a bit to get a bit of a blur on the waves to further emphasize the flow to the right though.
An incredible shot, with wonderful colors.
comment byRob at 10:36 AM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
Stunning. One of my favourites without a doubt. The tones in the sky against the pebbles and sand and the light colour of the groynes.
I'd be really interested to see the original straight from your camera with no alteration as a comparison, just to see how much change occurs PP (i'm not saying i disagree at all, most of us do it, but i'd just like to see the before and after comparison on one of your shots!)
comment byIan at 12:05 PM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
I can't believe this was taken at 70mm. I didn't pick it, that's for sure..
It's a great shot, it looks like it's got quite a wide angle too it.
Also, I LOVE the colour!!
comment byowen at 12:45 PM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005

comment by Su-yin at 01:36 PM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
Beautiful.
I think the wide angle really works here, as it emphasizes the size of the ocean in comparison to one man. (And in my opinion, shows one will not be 'drowned' out by the oh-so-wide ocean - as the man was the first thing I focussed on!) Also, I love the clouds ! :)
comment byregularjoe at 01:39 PM (GMT) on 13 October, 2005
I love this shot. I guess it goes to show that sometimes, being experimental, "more" creative and all that stuff isn't all that necessary. You just have to open your eyes and "see" what's around . IMO, the best thing about this is the composition. The sense of loneliness is reminiscent of an Edward Hopper painting....

Thanks everyone.
As for the fact that this was shot with my 70-200: one great side-effect of using a telephoto rather than a wideangle for this sort of shot is that it shortens the perspective. In this case the mountains appear a bit nearer than they might otherwise have done. Had I shot this at closer range at a wider angle, the mountains would have been much less conspicuous.
