This is the second shot of this guy that I've put up (the first one is here) and while it's hardly the most creative portrait I've ever put up I'm posting it now because a) I've not had time to prepare anything else (and suspect I may not have anything else worth preparing anyway), and b) because I think the lighting is worth a mention. This shot was taken on the last night of my trip to London (to the Europe Photobloggers meetup) and by this time I'd taken around 600 shots in a little over 24 hours. Having totally run out of inspiration I started playing around with the flash on an off-camera cord. From what I remember this one was shot with the flash at my hip over the head of which was a beer bottle – hence the green tinge. Anyway, I thought it was worth posting if for no other reason than to point out that you can achieve quite interesting lighting if you're drunk enough ;-)
Oh, and I should add that this was taken just at the point where he noticed the beer bottle/flash combo – hence the downward glance.
Hopefully I'll have a bit of time tomorrow to either post-process something I already have or shoot something new.

I like the photo Dave although the pixelation on my laptop lcd is horrendous - It is fine on the CRT though.
It has an album sleeve feel to it and is ready for some typography.

Great colors and perspective. I like the look on his face, seems to be concentrating.

beer bottle? not cropped? this requires an explaination. please.
eventhough you used a flash, the ambient lights seemed to have painted the photo for you, which is cool all the time.

An impressive picture, the illumination that has obtained gives a great dramatic quality him.

he looks like a completely different man because of the angles and the colours, wow. I thought he was a dj or something in this photo and had just taken off his headphones for a moment.

I think you should post more of these shots you don't seem have time for :-) ... I really like this -- love the intense expression --- and the colors grab me... good stuff!

Nice effect. Recently I have been suffereing from a lack of inspiration and motivation and am finding it boring to keep doing what I have been doing so far. Need to rush to the local bar with my camera I guess.

You don't need lighting if you're drunk enough dude. ^_^
I do like the green tint though, it gives it a very in the club feel to it.

Not a crop? Does this mean that the 20D can do 1:1 aspect ratio?
And cool lighting; it makes the image.

Cool lighting, a beer bottle hey, im sure people have spent a fortune trying all coloured gels to get effects like this, and all they needed to do was go grab a beer, great innovation :-)

As someone said earlier, I also thought it was a dj in a club. And it's probably better so, I'm mean probably better not to know what the guy is doing, or looking at. You know something's going on, without knowing what. This portrait is great for the colors, the sharpness, the expression, the contrast of his eyes.
Did you have any particular reason for chosing a square framing?

Thanks everyone.
Neil: sorry, the "no, honest" was meant as a joke ;-)
riqo: the square crop was because the right side of the image was entirely bland.
