I took this one last month while I was out with John and he put up a wonderfully 'dark' shot of this bloke at the time. I would give you the url, but I'm hooked up through a modem this evening – which is losing its connection every minute or so – so can't browse his site to find it. If/when we get our ADSL back I'll post the link.

Beautifully captured. The colours are wonderful.

Love the colours, but...what is with the colours? Is that brick actually green/yellow, or was that a processing decision?
And just to (hopefully) forestall that whole argument, I'm certainly not being judgmental if it does happen to be processed.
comment byVelviaPix at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 19 October, 2005
Dave,
I remember the dark version. I like this one better, after all, nothing I enjoy more in a photograph than vivid colour.
His eyes (or surroundings) were captured just perfectly, and that expression is so intense... makes me think of a thriller movie.
Nice to see you back to intense colours.
comment byJamey at 10:44 PM (GMT) on 19 October, 2005
Nice shot. It's a world apart from John's one (I know which one you mean) but no less striking. What's the story behind it? Was it a comission or a random member of the public?
comment bytobias at 10:59 PM (GMT) on 19 October, 2005
Oh, now this is a shame because I have seen Johns shot and the B&W impact was amazing. One of his best I felt. I don't like the brick background all tht much, the black and white version darkened that out and left the focus and seemingly the light on him. Hmmmm. Good but lacks the impact.

Once again by viewing John's shot and your shot of the same subject we get a far better view then with either shot on its own. You're quite a combo.
comment by Annabel at 11:34 PM (GMT) on 19 October, 2005
Good shot!
I saw the other 'darker' one and both are excellent. You've blurred up the background a bit?
Super colours and a real capture of someone really fascinating to look at.
Thanks!

Wonderful shot!
I've been following your photoblog for half a year now and I admire your pictures, especially since the colours always are so vivid. Do you tell the people you're taking a photo of that they are going to be published on your photoblog? How do they react?

Both photos (yours and Jonh) are amazing. Both photos are related but the way you captured makes it completely different. Don't know wich one I like more, but in technical terms both are perfect.
comment byRoxana at 01:45 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005
Wow. John's shot looks like part of dream sequence, but this photo looks like he might just start talking to you any second now. I feel as if I've personally upset him...
comment byJoe Lencioni at 02:39 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005
I like this one as well as John's. I think that the biggest thing that I like about this (besides the lovely colors) is the fact that we can see his shirt. For me, that adds another layer of interest.
However, as it usually goes with such white shirts, it seems a little blown out. It's definitely too bright in the left of the frame right on his collar. That part looks a bit odd to me. Otherwise, brilliant shot.
I love John's shot over this...I love everything about this shot except the wall...I find it a bit distractng...maybe its just me.
comment byRobW at 06:54 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005
Great stuff with the John comparison. The collar on the left looks slightly blown out, but then it could be my monitor setting.
Blahhh to the aDSL outage. Hope its back soon.
comment byOriol at 07:39 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005
A direct shot. I like much the intensity of the glance and the detail that you have obtained in the eyes. The color saturation of the face and the wall contrast perfectly with the overexposed shirt.
comment bypierre at 08:36 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005

comment byRob at 09:43 AM (GMT) on 20 October, 2005
He looks quite a different man from John's shot - John's being much darker and tightly cropped. Not sure which i prefer. Like the colours on this but think i prefer the crop on John's. Like the central composition though

~aside from the hot shirt, this is one heck of a fine informal street portrait...it's stratightforward, no fluff, mug-shot-like, which appeals to me visually, it's nothing but the strength of the character in this man's face and that works, it's what you set out to accomplish IMO...I'd hope to see more of this from you in the future~
