Here's what might turn out to be my penultimate shot from Dalian, and I would write more but I'm totally spaced out this evening, it's almost 1 AM and I have around 22 hours of travelling to do tomorrow. All being well I'll put something up on Thursday.

Oh, and thanks for all the great comments on my last two shots, they're very much appreciated.

Excellent! This is a gorgeous shot.

comment by Sergio de la Torre at 06:20 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Great! Everything seems stopped

comment by Jem at 06:27 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Great black and white shot - but, is it me or is the image tilted and every building leaning to the right slightly?

comment by djn1 at 06:31 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Jem: this one would have benefitted from being processed with DxO Optics Pro rather than Photoshop as I could have reliably corrected the lens distortion. I think this can be done with CS2, but it's something I've not tried before so I decided to leave it as it is.

On which note, as the most sleep I can possibly get this evening is four and a half hours, I'm going to bed.

See you all when I get back.

comment by Ivan at 06:36 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

great bw! :)
did you use a filter on the camera to get the graduated sky?

comment by nuno f at 07:02 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Fantastic shot!
Love the graduated sky with that black point (I presume it's an airplaine) wich makes the sky more dynamic. Another amazing photo!

comment by maze at 07:07 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Cool. I like the panorama-like view and the outstanding upright policeman.

comment by Nicola at 07:17 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Everything MUST go in "that" way...

Baci Nicola.

comment by Justus at 07:23 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Very great shot marred only by that unfortunate tilt. I like unconventional crop too. Keep the good stuff coming.

comment by dan culberson at 07:25 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Fascinatingly good. The sort of image that just belongs "somewhere"... like on the wall of an embassy or boardroom.

Although, I do percieve it is leaning to the right a bit... but that can be fixed easily enough.

Well done. Thanks for photoblogging.

comment by Colin at 07:57 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Don't straighten the buildings.....isn't that what makes this shot? The contrast with the (?) policeman all straight and proud.

Sometimes, just sometimes, a photo can be too perfect.

Love the toning and graduated sky...

comment by Ed { tfk } at 10:25 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

I love this b&w, the traffic person, buildings, all look great.
It would've been great to angle it as such that the traffic person was emphasized more, but that might've involved getting on the road!

comment by VelviaPix at 10:59 PM (GMT) on 25 October, 2005

Well... Unlike nuno f, if I had taken this shot, I would have cloned out the black spot, airplane, bird or whatever it is. I truly like the graduation, which looks like the effect of a polarizer filter, and the geometry of the buildings/street. Dave, I like this image, but I am not sure I can tell why you decided to crop it.
And I also see the policeman leaning a bit to the right. Sometimes we like to see more than there is to an image, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but respectfully, I do think that this would be better if it was straightened.

comment by bmoll at 12:21 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

I think one can make a mistake and tell it's a photo from 60s or 70s. There is hardly a detail saying it's modern world. Adding BW - a great effect :).

comment by Jesse at 02:10 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

keep the china shots coming! its good to see them. ive never been to dalian yet, but its on my list of places to go.

comment by KK at 02:41 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

a good view of the city, added bonus is the traffic officer.

comment by Yang at 02:59 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

What are you doing in china? can't wait to see your china pics!

comment by Cassidi at 03:15 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

My first impression is....sterile. It's a neat effect. Good stuff! Enjoy Dalian.

comment by keith at 04:32 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Looks like the policeman popped out of a cake. He doesnt seem to be directing any traffic or is he just letting the pedestrians across. Certainly is timeless.

comment by lisa at 05:05 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

ouuu, I like the panoramic take here... or perhaps it was just cropped to feel that way. Meh. still like it.

comment by andrew at 05:39 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Glad you got to post, I'm pleased with what you did!

comment by Ricardo at 07:43 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

One magnifies composition. The B&N also is magnificent.
Greetings

comment by Aidemedia - Dan at 09:07 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Like the crop, it really complements the feel of it. I'm a fan of 2x4. Is anybody taking any notice of that guy?

comment by pierre at 09:54 AM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Perfect shot dave

comment by tetsu at 12:30 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Nice composition!

Whoa! You know you've made it when you start getting spammed by spybots. How do we feel about membership for comments to avoid this sort of thing?

comment by Clement at 03:08 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

With CS2 you may use ptlens plugin which is free and is really a competitor in distortion correcting with DxO according to some tests.

What a shot ! Really strong composition

comment by Sanjin at 08:53 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

I like this shot a lot. As someone said above, it has that 60's feel to it. I think you did a great job converting colour image into b&w.

comment by Nishi at 09:30 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

awesome shot

comment by Phil at 09:31 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

I agree with the 60s/70s feel, although i wasnt alive then. I dont know what it is, but it just feels like something from before my time. Does make you wonder what he's directing. Wonderful shot.

comment by tobias at 09:41 PM (GMT) on 26 October, 2005

Something very regal and bygone about this image. Like a bygone era. His uniform is so crisp and smart.

comment by andy at 05:44 AM (GMT) on 27 October, 2005

Wow,I'm in Dalian NOW.Where can I find you.I like your shots so much. My mobile number is 13889596308 .Hope to see you soon.Have a nice trip!!!

comment by End_User-X at 07:22 AM (GMT) on 27 October, 2005

This shot somehow reminds me of Pink Floyd's Wish you were here album cover and poster, What with the spacious buildings and the man in the middle caught in mid-stride.

comment by warren at 07:26 AM (GMT) on 27 October, 2005

amazing!

comment by Ackbar at 04:31 PM (GMT) on 27 October, 2005

I think that the traffic being directed is blocked by the podium.

comment by emma at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 27 October, 2005

cool panorama - i love the arm sticking out on the policeman!

comment by Sun Xiaoxue at 02:28 AM (GMT) on 28 October, 2005

Why are you in Dalian? Is it a beautiful city? Do you work there, or just on a vacation?

comment by Yuting at 04:03 AM (GMT) on 28 October, 2005

just saying hello
i've been following your blog for a couple of months now, i think you're shots are fantastic. your photos are both exhilirating as well as inspiring

comment by djn1 at 02:19 PM (GMT) on 28 October, 2005

Just a quick message to let you know that we still don't have ADSL at home and our modem connection is extremely unreliable. As soon as I get things sorted out I'll resume posting again - in the meanwhile there isn't too much I can do about the absence of images :-/

comment by jasonspix at 02:51 PM (GMT) on 28 October, 2005

Makes me want to go that way. Nice composition.

comment by djn1 at 07:35 PM (GMT) on 28 October, 2005

the policeman almost looks like a statue...

comment by Califfoto at 09:31 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

I've been visiting your website since a few months. Even if I have never left you any comments, I really love your work. However, I don't find this one as unique as the others ...

comment by Jason Dale at 12:31 AM (GMT) on 9 December, 2005

Great shot and subject. I would have been tempted to clone stamp out the rogue bird in the top centre of the shot though.

comment by henria at 09:22 PM (GMT) on 14 February, 2006

Very balanced: I like this one.
