This was taken somewhere on the south shore of the Dalian peninsular and I couldn't help inventing a story for this one:

The figures you can see on the beach, that you can only just make out at this resolution, are a wedding party. I'm not sure if the ceremony was being performed on the beach, or whether they were taking pictures – we were too far away to tell – but I couldn't help wondering what relationship the figure on the cliff's edge had to the proceedings below. In all probability the answer is almost certainly none – I guess he was just standing there, much as I was – but I found myself wishing that he was more directly involved ... that maybe he was watching his one true love marry somebody else (or something equally bizarre). More likely though is that I wanted the shot to be more than just a shot of a tourist looking out to sea and any speculation on my part was more to do with jet-lag than anything else.

On another matter: we probably won't have our ADSL connection back till the middle of next week so I'm probably not going to be posting many comments between now and then. All being well things should be fixed soon.

What a misterious photo... I wonder what is thinking that guy: with that inmensity in front of him, im sure its equivalent to his worries :P

I love your photos, see ya! ;)

Got a "Goodfellas" feel to it. The hit man on the cliff. He's gonna take out the Greek tycoon. But first...a fag (that would be "cigarette" for all you Americans).

title exactly describes it... from here I dream too...

I don't know ... First of all, just like the pictrue from yesterday, the toning doesn't work for me. It's not sepia, it's not tri-tone (or maybe it is ...). YOu're losing a lot of detail because of that transfer. And for some reason, most of your picture are really really sharp, it seems that this one has a problem. It's especially visible in the background. The resolution seems very low with lots of artefacts ... What happened ?

Well anyway, I'll come back tomorrow and I'm sure I'll see something better !!! You have some much talent, I have no doubt !

Gorgeous color and, as you intimated, very "storyesque."

comment by Justus at 11:19 PM (GMT) on 29 October, 2005

I really like the sense of isolation given by the lack of a distinct division between sea and sky at the horizon. Personally, I like the toning decision. It gives a darker feeling to it and adds to the mystery and suspense of the shot. I can't see how anybody could not formulate some sort of fictional story to go along with this photograph. It's just unique in so many ways.

Great shot, incredibly surreal.
The horizon (or absence thereof) works really well with the guy, the lighting is perfect.

comment by Rob at 11:59 PM (GMT) on 29 October, 2005

Looks like the opening or ending shot from a Hitchcock film. Not my personal favorite - but I can appreciate it nonetheless. Welcome back.

One of your best in a long while in my opinion. I love images that leave a lot of their content up to the imagination of the viewer, letting them make up their own explanation, just as you've done. I like how you've toned it as well, gives it a movie-like quality.

comment by Phil at 12:42 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Great shot. There does seem to be a lot going on down below which makes the viewer think. I love how you got the guy in the shot. Brings life to the shot (besides all the people way off in the distance.

I also love the light on the horizon. Plus - this toning you use, I dig it.

comment by Cel at 02:42 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Bloody hell, that's really something with the light you have going on there. The saturation and color really kicks the mood. Best photo I've seen this week. Cheers.

comment by KK at 03:06 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

wow, brilliant colour brilliant feel to the shot. again, another amazing one.

comment by Keith at 03:14 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

It certainly is a picture to explore and let the imagination loose. I like his shadow along the cliff and his potentially perilous position.

comment by Karen at 04:37 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

This picture has this timeless feeling to it. Gorgeous.

comment by Josiah at 06:04 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

This is simply amazing.

How common is to find our selves making up a story from a simple image on our daily life? I do it a lot. I read a little and I have to say that I love the tones in this one and that I totally desagree with Fred. I've been working in something similar and somehow I am not that happy with the results. Really David. I know it is question of personal appreciation but I really love this kind of work. Now I wonder if you can give some ideas of how to make it. It would be really appreciated and helpful for a novice like me. :(

comment by martin_d at 12:27 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

very intensive colors!
the posture and his shadow on the ground support somehow perfectly the story
thx for this one

comment by tobias at 01:59 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

I like the light and colour to this. The shadow on his jacket is great too. Very moody and thought provoking. Great story too.

comment by BDM at 03:58 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Fantastic photo! How do you get the sky to look like that - with the gradient? Is that a post thing? And the color (or modification thereof) is great, too. It's kinda black and white, and kinda not... I clearly need to spend equal time learning both tricks and techniques with the camera, and with Photoshop. Keep it up!

comment by jcyrhs at 04:25 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Damn. I love this photo. It looks like a scene taken out of a movie. LOVE IT LOVE IT!

1. Sky is fantastic
2. Coastal line is mesmorizing
3. Elongated shadows add the touch
4. Beautiful tones
5. Superb composition
6. Arghz.

Definitely one of my fav.

i was for a moment overwhelmed when i saw the shot. it is amazing.

comment by m at 05:39 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Some great pics from your trip, but only one with any colour in. When seeing a new place and especially a place with a very different culture, I find myself wanting to see the colours that people wear are they bright, drab, uniform or utilitarian?

comment by flying cow at 06:28 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

love the framing and the tones. how did you achieve this colour?

comment by EOS Chaos at 06:37 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

So much to like about this shot, most of which has been said above. I will say this much though, i find the toning just superb. I feel it adds so much to the mood and mystery of the scene. Excellent!

what a gorgeus photo.... i remeber the image from one movie: Bond James Bond... es spia a quien ame

comment by djn1 at 08:24 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

Thanks everyone.

As for the toning: it was a combination of using Curves to adjust the different channels (boosting the green and blue channel in the shadows and the red channel in the highlights), selective colour (to balance the sky to the sea) and the channel mixer to (mostly) desaturate the image.

comment by nogger at 11:12 PM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005

I like how the horizon just blends with the sky.

comment by neowenyang at 05:43 AM (GMT) on 1 November, 2005

this is one of my fave pics on ur site.. the colour is very intriguing... like one of those early chinese films with the good-looking shanghainese gentlemen in suits looking contemplatively out to see... THe composition is excellent, especially since you've decided to explain the thing about the wedding. I just love it!

comment by Tristan at 05:57 AM (GMT) on 2 November, 2005

Interesting toning on this one. It almost looks like cross processed black and white but I don't think there is such a thing.

comment by Tiago P. at 05:27 PM (GMT) on 8 November, 2005

i love this.
very cinematographic (did I spell that right?)
post processing really added to the overall mood.
nice work!

I as well have to say this is one of my favorites of yours, for all the main reasons, composition, color tone, subject, story, everything man it's fantastic. Thanks.
