This was taken somewhere on the south shore of the Dalian peninsular and I couldn't help inventing a story for this one:
The figures you can see on the beach, that you can only just make out at this resolution, are a wedding party. I'm not sure if the ceremony was being performed on the beach, or whether they were taking pictures – we were too far away to tell – but I couldn't help wondering what relationship the figure on the cliff's edge had to the proceedings below. In all probability the answer is almost certainly none – I guess he was just standing there, much as I was – but I found myself wishing that he was more directly involved ... that maybe he was watching his one true love marry somebody else (or something equally bizarre). More likely though is that I wanted the shot to be more than just a shot of a tourist looking out to sea and any speculation on my part was more to do with jet-lag than anything else.
On another matter: we probably won't have our ADSL connection back till the middle of next week so I'm probably not going to be posting many comments between now and then. All being well things should be fixed soon.

What a misterious photo... I wonder what is thinking that guy: with that inmensity in front of him, im sure its equivalent to his worries :P
I love your photos, see ya! ;)

Got a "Goodfellas" feel to it. The hit man on the cliff. He's gonna take out the Greek tycoon. But first...a fag (that would be "cigarette" for all you Americans).

I don't know ... First of all, just like the pictrue from yesterday, the toning doesn't work for me. It's not sepia, it's not tri-tone (or maybe it is ...). YOu're losing a lot of detail because of that transfer. And for some reason, most of your picture are really really sharp, it seems that this one has a problem. It's especially visible in the background. The resolution seems very low with lots of artefacts ... What happened ?
Well anyway, I'll come back tomorrow and I'm sure I'll see something better !!! You have some much talent, I have no doubt !

Gorgeous color and, as you intimated, very "storyesque."

I really like the sense of isolation given by the lack of a distinct division between sea and sky at the horizon. Personally, I like the toning decision. It gives a darker feeling to it and adds to the mystery and suspense of the shot. I can't see how anybody could not formulate some sort of fictional story to go along with this photograph. It's just unique in so many ways.

Great shot, incredibly surreal.
The horizon (or absence thereof) works really well with the guy, the lighting is perfect.

Looks like the opening or ending shot from a Hitchcock film. Not my personal favorite - but I can appreciate it nonetheless. Welcome back.

One of your best in a long while in my opinion. I love images that leave a lot of their content up to the imagination of the viewer, letting them make up their own explanation, just as you've done. I like how you've toned it as well, gives it a movie-like quality.
comment byPhil at 12:42 AM (GMT) on 30 October, 2005
Great shot. There does seem to be a lot going on down below which makes the viewer think. I love how you got the guy in the shot. Brings life to the shot (besides all the people way off in the distance.
I also love the light on the horizon. Plus - this toning you use, I dig it.
Stunning image is this....Very good toning....helps to build the mysterious feel on this one...

How common is to find our selves making up a story from a simple image on our daily life? I do it a lot. I read a little and I have to say that I love the tones in this one and that I totally desagree with Fred. I've been working in something similar and somehow I am not that happy with the results. Really David. I know it is question of personal appreciation but I really love this kind of work. Now I wonder if you can give some ideas of how to make it. It would be really appreciated and helpful for a novice like me. :(

Fantastic photo! How do you get the sky to look like that - with the gradient? Is that a post thing? And the color (or modification thereof) is great, too. It's kinda black and white, and kinda not... I clearly need to spend equal time learning both tricks and techniques with the camera, and with Photoshop. Keep it up!

As for the toning: it was a combination of using Curves to adjust the different channels (boosting the green and blue channel in the shadows and the red channel in the highlights), selective colour (to balance the sky to the sea) and the channel mixer to (mostly) desaturate the image.
