Shipka #2, 2017
16th August 2017
by David J. Nightingale
A shot of the (not quite so) eternal flame at Shipka Monument, originally lit to commemorate the 1877 battle for the Shipka pass: fought between the Russian Empire, aided by Bulgarian volunteers known as Opalchentsi, and the Ottoman Empire. The descisive moment occured in August 1877, when a group of 5,000 Bulgarian and 2,500 Russian troops drove back an attack against the peak by nearly 40,000 Ottoman soldiers.

I'm not entirely sure I can tell you why I like this shot as much as I do, but it's one of my favourites from our recent trip to Venice.

Just fantastic David! At one time it looks expansive and, like a small model I can hold in my hand. Great framing and composing.

Thanks Carlos. And yes, the size is hard to work out. It’s actually about 12′ across, so not small, but not massive either.
