Composition 101
2nd June 2017
by David J. Nightingale
One of the compositional exercises I often set our students on our Venice Carnival Photo Tour is to shoot a set of images that break the rules, not because there’s any inherent benefit in doing so – generally speaking these rules serve us well – but to impose a frame of mind where nothing can be taken for granted. It’s a useful visual exercise, and often makes you look at a subject in quite unexpected ways.
This was my effort during that session, shot to illustrate that you can place a focal point in the exact centre of an image.

I'm not entirely sure I can tell you why I like this shot as much as I do, but it's one of my favourites from our recent trip to Venice.

A shot of the (not quite so) eternal flame at Shipka Monument, originally lit to commemorate the 1877 battle for the Shipka pass: fought between the Russians and Bulgarians and the Ottoman Empire.

Shot back in 2012, this was a long exposure taken just after sunset. As you can see, if you take a look at the original, I processed this one to bring out the detail on the horizon and in the rather unusual clouds.
